Eine axiale Belastung führt dazu, dass sich ein Stab dehnt und Dehnungsenergie in ihm speichert. Die Dehnungsenergiedichte im Stab ist die Energie pro Volumeneinheit.
Dabei ist das Verhältnis der Normalkraft zur Fläche die Spannung, und das Verhältnis der Dehnung zur ursprünglichen Länge des Stabes ist die erzeugte Dehnung.
Innerhalb des elastischen Bereichs kann die Dehnungsenergiedichte in Form des Elastizitätsmoduls ausgedrückt werden.
Die Spannungs-Dehnungs-Kurve weist eine lineare Beziehung im elastischen Bereich auf, was bedeutet, dass die Dehnungsenergiedichte dem Hookeschen Gesetz folgt. Hier wird die Dehnung nach Beseitigung der Spannung Null. Dieser Bereich der Energiedichte wird als Elastizitätsmodul bezeichnet.
Im plastischen Bereich bleibt auch nach dem Entfernen der Belastung eine gewisse bleibende Dehnung bestehen. Es wird also nur ein Teil der Dehnungsenergiedichte wiederhergestellt, und die verbleibende Energiedichte wird für die Verformung des Objekts in Form von Wärme aufgewendet. 
Die Gesamtfläche unter der Kurve wird als Zähigkeitsmodul bezeichnet und stellt die Gesamtenergiedichte dar, die zum Brechen des Stabes erforderlich ist.

Strain-Energy Density

Das Verständnis der Dehnungsenergiedichte in Materialien unter axialer Belastung ist für die Bewertung ihres mechanischen Verhaltens und ihrer Haltbarkeit von entscheidender Bedeutung. Wenn ein Stab einer solchen Belastung ausgesetzt wird, dehnt er sich aus und speichert Energie, die sogenannte Dehnungsenergie, als potentielle Energie im Material. Diese Energie wird als Energie pro Volumeneinheit gemessen.

Im elastischen Bereich eines Materials ist der Zusammenhang zwischen Spannung und Dehnung linear und folgt dem Hookeschen Gesetz. Die Dehnungsenergiedichte in diesem Bereich wird aus der Fläche unter der Spannungs-Dehnungs-Kurve bis zur Elastizitätsgrenze berechnet. Diese gespeicherte Energie ist rückgewinnbar und wird als Elastizitätsmodul bezeichnet. Sie gibt an, wie viel Energie das Material aufnehmen kann und beim Entladen dennoch in seine ursprüngliche Form zurückkehrt.

Jenseits der Elastizitätsgrenze verhält sich das Material plastisch und verformt sich dauerhaft. In diesem plastischen Bereich ist beim Entladen nur ein Teil der gespeicherten Energie rückgewinnbar; Der Rest geht als Wärme verloren oder wird zur bleibenden Verformung genutzt. Die Gesamtenergie, die ein Material absorbieren kann, bevor es reißt, wird anhand des Zähigkeitsmoduls gemessen.

Energy stored in a rod under axial load helps show how a material will respond to stretching and breaking. When the rod elongates, it stores strain energy as potential energy inside the material. Strain energy density is the amount of that energy per unit volume.

In the elastic region, stress and strain have a linear relationship that follows Hooke's Law. The strain energy density in this region is found from the area under the stress-strain curve up to the elastic limit. This recoverable energy is called the modulus of resilience. It shows how much energy a material can absorb and still return to its original shape when the load is removed.

After the elastic limit, the material enters the plastic region. In this stage, the material deforms permanently, so only part of the stored energy comes back during unloading. The rest is lost as heat or used in permanent deformation. The total energy a material can absorb before rupture is called the modulus of toughness. This value is important when choosing materials for impact resistance and ductility, and for designing structures that must handle mechanical loads.
