In einer Diodenschaltung treibt eine DC-Bias-Spannung den Diodenstrom durch einen Widerstand und zeigt ein exponentielles Verhalten in der Strom-Spannungs-Kennlinie.
Wenn ein kleines, zeitlich veränderliches Signal eingeführt wird, verbindet es sich mit der DC-Bias-Spannung, die um den Q-Punkt zentriert ist.
Der Exponentialterm im gesamten momentanen Diodenstrom trägt sowohl zum Bias-Strom als auch zum Signalstrom bei.
Ist die Amplitude der Signalspannung deutlich kleiner als die thermische Spannung, arbeitet die Diode innerhalb eines kurzen, nahezu linearen Segments der Kennlinie.
Bei dieser Kleinsignal-Näherung vereinfacht sich der Exponentialterm.
Dadurch wird der Diodenstrom zur Summe aus dem DC-Bias-Strom und dem Signalstrom.
Der Kleinsignalleitwert der Diode ist definiert als das Verhältnis des Kleinsignalstroms zur Kleinsignalspannung, das durch die Steigung der Tangente zur I-U-Kurve am Q-Punkt bestimmt wird.
Der Kehrwert des Dioden-Kleinsignalleitwerts, der als Dioden-Kleinsignalwiderstand oder Inkrementalwiderstand bezeichnet wird, entspricht der thermischen Spannung dividiert durch den Bias-Strom.

Small-signal Diode Model

Bei der Analyse des Verhaltens von Dioden in Schaltkreisen ist die Beziehung zwischen dem Strom durch eine Diode und der Spannung über ihr von besonderem Interesse, insbesondere wenn man die Wirkung einer Gleichstromvorspannung (DC) betrachtet. Wenn diese DC-Vorspannung angelegt wird, beeinflusst sie den Betriebspunkt der Diode, den sogenannten Q-Punkt, um den herum die Strom-Spannungs-Kennlinie (I-V) der Diode ein exponentielles Verhalten zeigt. Die Einführung eines kleinen, zeitabhängigen Signals zusätzlich zu dieser Vorspannung hilft bei der Untersuchung der Reaktion der Diode auf Schwankungen um diesen Q-Punkt herum.

Wenn die Amplitude dieser zusätzlichen Signalspannung erheblich kleiner bleibt als die thermische Spannung (V_T) der Diode, kann die Reaktion der Diode über einen kurzen Abschnitt ihrer Kennlinie als linear angenähert werden. Dieses Szenario, das als Kleinsignalnäherung bezeichnet wird, vereinfacht die komplexe exponentielle Beziehung zu einer besser handhabbaren linearen Beziehung, wodurch der gesamte momentane Diodenstrom (i_D) als Summe des konstanten Vorspannungsstroms i_D(DC) und des variierenden Signalstroms i_D(AC) betrachtet werden kann.

Das Maß, das den Signalstrom mit der Signalspannung verbindet, wird in Bezug auf die Leitfähigkeit ausgedrückt, gemessen in mhos, und wird als Dioden-Kleinsignalleitfähigkeit bezeichnet. Diode bias and small-signal response describe how a diode behaves when a steady DC voltage and a tiny changing signal act on the same circuit. The DC bias sets the diode’s operating point, or Q point. Around that point, the diode current and voltage follow an exponential I-V relationship.

A small time-varying signal can be added on top of the DC bias to study how the diode responds to small changes. When the signal voltage is much smaller than the thermal voltage, the diode’s behavior can be treated as linear over a short part of its curve. This is called the small-signal approximation.

With this approximation, the total diode current can be written as the sum of a constant DC part and a varying AC part. The signal current is linked to the signal voltage by the diode small-signal conductance, which is measured in mhos. This conductance is the slope of the tangent to the I-V curve at the Q point.

The inverse of conductance is the diode’s small-signal, or incremental, resistance, r d. It shows how much the diode resists small changes in current. It is found by dividing the thermal voltage by the bias current. These ideas are useful when analyzing and designing circuits that use diodes for signal amplification or attenuation.
