Die Ausgangsspannung wird dann bestimmt, indem der Spannungsabfall der Diode von der Eingangsspannung subtrahiert wird.
Umgekehrt ist während des negativen Halbzyklus die Eingangsspannung niedriger als der Spannungsabfall der Diode, und die Diode bleibt nicht leitend, was zu einer Ausgangsspannung von Null führt.
Obwohl die Eingangsspannung mit einem Durchschnittswert von Null die Polarität ändert, bleibt der Ausgang aufgrund der Gleichrichtung unidirektional mit einem konstanten Mittelwert.

Die Funktionsweise eines Halbwellengleichrichters basiert auf dem Prinzip, dass Dioden den Stromfluss nur in eine Richtung zulassen. Während der positiven Halbwellen des Wechselstromeingangs ist die Diode in Durchlassrichtung vorgespannt, da die Eingangsspannung den Schwellenwert der Diode überschreitet. Folglich fließt Strom durch den Schaltkreis und eine Ausgangsspannung entsteht über dem Lastwiderstand. Diese Ausgangsspannung ist die Eingangsspannung abzüglich des Durchlassspannungsabfalls der Diode.

Auf der anderen Seite ist die Diode während der negativen Halbwellen in Sperrrichtung vorgespannt. Die Eingangsspannung reicht nicht aus, um die inhärente Potenzialbarriere der Diode zu überwinden, wodurch die Diode nichtleitend wird. Daher fließt kein Strom und die Ausgangsspannung fällt auf Null. Diese Gleichrichtung führt zu einem pulsierenden Gleichstrom (DC), der nur während der positiven Halbwellen des Eingangswechselstromsignals fließt.

Ein entscheidender Parameter für Dioden in Gleichrichterschaltungen ist die Spitzensperrspannung (PIV). Dies ist die maximale Spannung, die die Diode in Sperrrichtung aushalten kann, ohne durchzubrechen. In einem Halbwellengleichrichter ist die PIV im Wesentlichen der Spitzenwert der Eingangswechselspannung, jedoch mit entgegengesetzter Polarität. Half wave rectifier

Single-diode AC to DC conversion uses a half-wave rectifier to change alternating current into a unidirectional voltage. The circuit is simple. It uses one diode in series with a load resistor and an AC power source.

The diode controls the current because it allows flow in only one direction. During the positive half-cycles of the AC input, the diode is forward-biased. When the input voltage is greater than the diode threshold, current flows and an output voltage appears across the load resistor. That output is the input voltage minus the diode's forward voltage drop.

During the negative half-cycles, the diode is reverse-biased. The input voltage cannot overcome the diode's internal barrier, so the diode does not conduct. As a result, no current flows and the output voltage falls to zero. The circuit therefore produces a pulsating DC signal that appears only during the positive half-cycles of the AC input.

Diode selection also matters in rectifier circuits because of peak inverse voltage, or PIV. PIV is the maximum reverse voltage a diode can withstand without breakdown. In a half-wave rectifier, the PIV is essentially the peak value of the input AC voltage with opposite polarity. The diode must handle this reverse voltage to avoid damage and help the circuit last longer.
