Die vereinfachte E/X-Methode unterstützt die Auswahl des Leistungsschalters, indem sie den maximalen symmetrischen Kurzschlussstrom unter Verwendung der Vorfehlerspannung und der Systemreaktanz berechnet und andere Faktoren vernachlässigt.
Für Generatoren werden Zweitakt-Leistungsschalter auf der Grundlage des subtransienten Fehlerstroms ausgewählt, der anhand subtransienter Reaktanzen berechnet wird. Bei Synchronmotoren gelten je nach Drehzahl des Leistungsschalters subtransiente oder transiente Reaktanzen.
Sicherungen, Überstromgeräte mit einer schmelzbaren Verbindung in einem sandgefüllten Rohr, fungieren im Normalbetrieb als Leiter. Der Überlaststrom erhöht die Temperatur der Verbindung, wodurch sie schmilzt und einen Lichtbogen bildet.

Ein Leistungsschalter ist ein Gerät, das Fehlerströme unterbricht und manchmal automatisch wieder schließt. Wenn ein Fehlerstrom erkannt wird, trennt der Leistungsschalter die elektrischen Kontakte, wodurch ein Lichtbogen entsteht. Dieser Lichtbogen wird je nach Konstruktion des Leistungsschalters durch Methoden wie Verlängerung, Kühlung oder Spaltung gelöscht. Leistungsschalter werden anhand der Spannung, bei der sie arbeiten, und des Mediums, das zur Lichtbogenlöschung verwendet wird, wie Luft, Öl, SF6-Gas oder Vakuum, kategorisiert.

In Hochspannungssystemen verfügen Leistungsschalter normalerweise über automatische Wiedereinschaltmechanismen. Diese Leistungsschalter schließen sich innerhalb von 15 bis 50 Zyklen nach einer Unterbrechung wieder. Wenn der Fehler weiterhin besteht, werden sie gesperrt, was ein manuelles Eingreifen durch einen Bediener erforderlich macht. In Niederspannungssystemen sind Leistungsschalter mit Doppelauslösung und Formgehäuse üblich. Diese Leistungsschalter verwenden magnetische Sofortauslöser zur Bewältigung großer Fehler und thermische Auslöser zur Bewältigung kleinerer Fehler.

Die E/X-Methode vereinfacht die Auswahl des Leistungsschalters durch Berechnung des maximalen symmetrischen Kurzschlussstroms. Dieser Ansatz verwendet die Vorfehlerspannung und die Systemreaktanzeigenschaften und ignoriert andere Faktoren. Bei Generatoren werden Zweitakt-Leistungsschalter verwendet, um den subtransienten Fehlerstrom zu berechnen, wobei die subtransienten Maschinenreaktanzen zugrunde gelegt werden. Bei Synchronmotoren werden subtransiente oder transiente Reaktanzen basierend auf der Betriebsgeschwindigkeit des Leistungsschalters berücksichtigt.

Sicherungen dienen als Überstromschutzvorrichtungen und enthalten eine Schmelzdraht in einem mit Sand gefüllten Rohr. Unter normalen Bedingungen leitet die Schmelzsicherung Strom. Bei einem Überlaststrom steigt die Temperatur der Sicherung, wodurch diese schmilzt und einen Lichtbogen bildet. Sicherungen werden anhand von vier Schlüsselfaktoren spezifiziert: Nennstrom, Nennspannung, Unterbrechungsleistung und Zeitverzögerungseigenschaften. Sicherungen müssen manuell ausgetauscht werden, sobald sie geschmolzen sind.

Sowohl Leistungsschalter als auch Sicherungen spielen eine entscheidende Rolle beim Schutz elektrischer Systeme vor Fehlerströmen und Überstromzuständen. Leistungsschalter mit ihrer Fähigkeit, automatisch wieder zu schließen und verschiedene Arten von Fehlern zu bewältigen, sind in Hoch- und Niederspannungsanwendungen unverzichtbar. Sicherungen sind zwar einfacher und müssen manuell ausgetauscht werden, bieten jedoch zuverlässigen Schutz, indem sie Überströme unterbrechen. Das Verständnis der spezifischen Anforderungen und Eigenschaften des elektrischen Systems ist entscheidend für die Auswahl der geeigneten Schutzgeräte, um Sicherheit und Betriebskontinuität zu gewährleisten.

Circuit breakers and fuses protect electrical systems from fault current and overcurrent. They help stop damage when current rises above safe limits. Both devices are chosen based on the needs of the electrical system.

A circuit breaker interrupts fault current by separating its contacts. This creates an arc, which must be extinguished by elongation, cooling, or splitting, depending on the breaker design. Breakers are grouped by operating voltage and by the arc-extinguishing medium, such as air, oil, SF6 gas, or vacuum.

High-voltage circuit breakers often include automatic reclosing. They can reclose within 15 to 50 cycles after an interruption. If the fault remains, the breaker locks out and an operator must reset it manually. In low-voltage systems, dual-trip molded case breakers are common. These use magnetic instantaneous trips for large faults and thermal trips for smaller faults.

The E/X method is used to simplify breaker selection. It finds the maximum symmetrical short-circuit current from the prefault voltage and the system reactance. It ignores other factors. For generators, two-cycle breakers are used to calculate subtransient fault current from subtransient machine reactances. For synchronous motors, subtransient or transient reactances are used, depending on breaker operating speed.

Fuses are overcurrent devices with a fusible link inside a sand-filled tube. Under normal conditions, the fusible link carries current. During an overload, its temperature rises, the link melts, and an arc forms. Fuses are selected by current rating, voltage rating, interrupting rating, and time-delay characteristics. After they melt, they must be replaced by hand. Circuit breakers and fuses both provide important protection against fault conditions, but they do so in different ways.
