Die Primärwicklung eines Stromwandlers weist typischerweise eine einzelne Windung oder einen leitenden Stab auf, um den mehrere Windungen der Sekundärwicklung gewickelt sind.
Der hohe Strom, der durch die Primärwicklung fließt, führt zu einer Verringerung des Stroms in der Sekundärwicklung. Die Sekundärwicklung wird in der Regel in Reihe mit den Nullimpedanz-Messgeräten geschaltet, um einen maximalen Stromfluss zu ermöglichen. 
Die Leistung eines Stromwandlers beruht auf der genauen Replikation des Primärstroms ohne fehlerverursachende Sättigung. Stromwandler können jedoch etwas Strom verlieren, um die Erregerimpedanz zu überbrücken.
Betrachten wir nun die Spannungswandler, die aus einer Primärwicklung mit einer größeren Anzahl von Wicklungen bestehen als die Sekundärwicklung.
Die Sekundärwicklung ist parallel zu einem hochohmigen Spannungsmessgerät geschaltet, um eine genaue Spannungsübertragung zu gewährleisten.
Zum Schutz werden Spannungswandler als ideal modelliert, wodurch eine verkleinerte, phasengleiche Darstellung der Primärspannung erzeugt wird. 
Bei Spannungswandlern kommt es jedoch zu kleinen Spannungsabfällen und Phasenverschiebungen.

Messtransformatoren, bestehend aus Spannungswandlern (VTs) und Stromwandlern (CTs), spielen in Umspannwerken eine entscheidende Rolle, indem sie isolierte Nachbildungen von Strom oder Spannung für Mess- und Schutzzwecke bereitstellen. Spannungstransformatoren reduzieren die Primärspannung auf ein für Relaisbetrieb und Messung geeignetes Niveau, während Stromtransformatoren den Primärstrom herunterskalieren. Die Primärwicklung eines Stromwandlerss besteht oft aus einer einzigen Windung, die dadurch erreicht wird, dass der Primärleiter des Stromsystems durch seinen Kern geführt wird, obwohl einige Anwendungen mehrere Primärwindungen erfordern können.

Aus Schutzgründen sind Spannungswandler idealerweise so ausgelegt, dass sie eine verkleinerte, phasengleiche Darstellung der Primärspannung erzeugen. Die Sekundärseite eines Spannungswandlers sollte an ein Spannungserfassungsgerät mit hoher Impedanz angeschlossen werden, um sicherzustellen, dass die gesamte Sekundärspannung am Erfassungsgerät anliegt. Umgekehrt sollte die Sekundärseite eines Stromwandlers an ein Stromerfassungsgerät mit niedriger Impedanz angeschlossen werden, um sicherzustellen, dass der gesamte Sekundärstrom durch das Erfassungsgerät fließen kann.

In praktischen Anwendungen können bei Spannungstransformatoren Spannungsabfälle und Phasenwinkelunterschiede zwischen der Primär- und der Sekundärseite auftreten. In ähnlicher Weise kann bei Stromwandlern ein Teil des Stroms zwischen dem niederohmigen Sensorgerät und der Shunt-Erregungsimpedanz des Transformators aufgeteilt werden. Die Leistung eines Stromtransformators hängt weitgehend von seiner Fähigkeit ab, den Primärstrom ohne signifikante Fehler oder Sättigungseffekte genau zu reproduzieren.

Diese Transformatoren sind für den präzisen Betrieb von Schutzrelais und Messgeräten unerlässlich und gewährleisten den sicheren und zuverlässigen Betrieb von Stromsystemen. Durch die Herunterskalierung hoher Spannungen und Ströme ermöglichen Messtransformatoren die Überwachung und Steuerung elektrischer Parameter in handhabbaren Bereichen und sorgen so für die Aufrechterhaltung der Systemstabilität und des Schutzes.

Instrument Transformers

Instrument transformers help power substations measure voltage and current safely. They create isolated replicas of electrical signals for measurement and protection. These devices support protective relays and other monitoring equipment that keep power systems stable and reliable.

The two main types are voltage transformers, or VTs, and current transformers, or CTs. A voltage transformer reduces the primary voltage to a lower level that relays and measuring devices can use. A current transformer scales down the primary current in the same way.

A current transformer often uses a single-turn primary winding. In many cases, the power conductor is simply threaded through the core to act as that turn. Some applications need multiple primary turns instead.

For protection, a voltage transformer should produce a scaled-down secondary voltage that stays in phase with the primary voltage. Its secondary should connect to a high-impedance voltage-sensing device. That setup lets the full secondary voltage appear across the sensing device.

A current transformer works differently. Its secondary should connect to a low-impedance current-sensing device so the full secondary current flows through the device. In practice, some current can split between the sensing device and the transformer’s shunt excitation impedance. VTs can also show voltage drops and phase-angle differences between the primary and secondary sides.

Current transformer performance depends on how well it reproduces the primary current without large errors or saturation. By reducing very high voltages and currents to manageable levels, instrument transformers let engineers monitor electrical values and protect the power system.
