Verbundmauerwerkswände werden aus zwei oder mehr Wänden hergestellt, die aus unterschiedlichen Mauerwerksmaterialien oder denselben Mauerwerksmaterialien hergestellt werden.
Die Wände sind durch eine etwa dreiviertel Zoll breite Kragenfuge getrennt, die mit Mörtel gefüllt ist, oder durch einen breiteren Raum, der beim Bau der Mauer in Aufzügen verpresst werden kann.
Alternativ werden die einzelnen Wythes zu einer massiven Wand miteinander verbunden, wobei üblicherweise starre Metallanker oder Verstärkungen verwendet werden und selten überlappende Mauerwerks-Header-Einheiten verwendet werden.
Metallanker, die das Eindringen von Wasser weniger fördern, werden gegenüber Mauerwerksköpfen bevorzugt, da die Verbundwände in erster Linie das Eindringen von Regen verhindern, indem sie Feuchtigkeit aufnehmen und dann durch Verdunstung wieder an die Atmosphäre abgeben.
Stellen Sie sich eine traditionelle Verbundmauer aus Mauerwerk mit einer Steinverkleidung vor, die langlebig und ästhetisch ansprechend ist, und einer angrenzenden Mauer aus kostengünstigeren Ziegeln. Diese beiden Schichten werden mit Metallbindern miteinander verbunden.

Traditionell können Verbundwände verschiedene Materialien wie Terrakotta, Stein oder Verblendziegel mit Innenschichten aus Ziegeln oder Hohlziegeln mischen, um ein optimales Gleichgewicht zwischen Aussehen, Haltbarkeit und Kosteneffizienz zu erreichen. Ein klassisches Beispiel ist eine Wand, die eine langlebige und ästhetisch ansprechende Steinfassade mit einer wirtschaftlichen Innenschale aus Ziegeln kombiniert, wobei Metallanker zur Verbindung verwendet werden. Moderne Praktiken tendieren jedoch dazu, einheitliche Mauerwerksarten und Metallanker über Mauerwerksköpfen zum Verbinden von Schalungen zu verwenden, insbesondere bei tragenden Strukturen, um ein einheitliches strukturelles Verhalten in der gesamten Wand sicherzustellen. Moisture control matters because these walls absorb water and then release it into the air. Composite walls have often used mixed materials to balance appearance, strength, and cost. A common example is a wall with an outer stone facing for durability and looks, and an inner brick wythe for lower cost. Other traditional combinations have included terra cotta and hollow clay tile.
