Ein Gebäude mit Paneelen aus Polystyrolschaum, die an der Außenwand befestigt sind, die dann mit einer Schicht Polymerstuck bedeckt und mit Glasfasernetz verstärkt werden, wird von außen isoliert.
In ähnlicher Weise kann eine interne Wärmedämmung erreicht werden, indem reflektierende Barrieren oder Vliesisolierungen mit Hilfe von Furnierstreifen an der Oberfläche der Innenwand angebracht werden, gefolgt von der Installation einer Gipswandplatte, um einen verborgenen Raum für die Unterbringung der Versorgungseinrichtungen zu schaffen.
Darüber hinaus trägt die Aufrechterhaltung eines ausreichenden Luftspalts zwischen den Wänden, das Einfügen von Platten aus Kunststoffschaum in diesen Raum oder das Füllen von körnigen Isolierungen wie Perlit in den Hohlraum zwischen den Ziegeln zur Wärmedämmung der Wände bei."
Bei stark bewehrten Wänden dient der Bewehrungsstahl jedoch als Wärmebrücke, und der begrenzte Platz für die Isolierung führt zu einer verminderten Wärmedämmung.
Die Wahl der Wärmedämmung hängt von der Gebäudefunktion, den baurechtlichen Vorschriften und einer Kosten-Nutzen-Analyse ab.

In heißen, trockenen Klimazonen kann die thermische Masse von Mauerwerken von Vorteil sein, da sie tagsüber Wärme absorbiert und nachts wieder abgibt, wodurch die Innentemperaturen stabilisiert werden. In den meisten anderen Klimazonen ist jedoch eine zusätzliche Isolierung erforderlich, um den Wärmewiderstand zu erhöhen.

Eine Außenisolierung kann mithilfe eines Wärmedämmverbundsystems (WDVS) erfolgen, bei dem Platten aus Schaumstoff an der Wand befestigt und mit einem mit Glasfasergewebe verstärkten Polymerputz abgedeckt werden. Diese Methode verbessert nicht nur die Isolierung, sondern schützt das Mauerwerk auch vor extremen Temperaturen, weshalb sie eine beliebte Wahl für die Nachrüstung bestehender Gebäude ist, bei denen die Erhaltung des äußeren Erscheinungsbilds keine Priorität hat.

Eine weitere Methode ist die Isolierung innerhalb der Wand, bei der während des Baus Schaumstoffplatten gegen die Innenschale eingesetzt oder die Hohlkerne von Betonblöcken mit Schaumstoffauskleidungen gefüllt werden. Diese Innendämmung ist zwar wirksam, behindert jedoch nicht die Wärmeübertragung durch die festen Abschnitte des Mauerwerks, wie etwa die Stege der Blöcke oder vollständig verfugte Bereiche, was ihre Effizienz etwas einschränkt.

Auch die Isolierung der Innenfläche von Mauerwerken ist möglich. Dabei wird die Dämmung normalerweise direkt an der Wand angebracht, gefolgt von Holz- oder Metalllatten. Innenausbaumaterialien wie Gipskartonplatten werden dann auf diese Unterkonstruktion montiert. Diese Methode verbessert nicht nur die Wärmedämmung, sondern schafft auch einen praktischen Hohlraum zum Verlegen von elektrischen Leitungen und Rohrleitungen, was eine häufige Herausforderung im Mauerwerksbau löst.

Thermal Insulation in Masonry Walls

Masonry wall insulation can be placed on the outside, inside the wall, or on the interior surface. The best choice depends on the climate, the building design, and whether the wall is being built new or retrofitted. In hot, dry climates, masonry can help smooth indoor temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night.

In many other climates, extra insulation is needed to improve thermal resistance. One common exterior method is an Exterior Insulation and Finish System, or EIFS. EIFS uses plastic foam panels fixed to the wall and then covered with a polymeric stucco reinforced with glass fiber mesh. This approach adds insulation and also shields the masonry from temperature extremes. It is often used when an existing building is being updated and the original exterior look does not need to stay the same.

Insulation can also be added within the wall during construction. This may involve placing plastic foam slabs against the inner wythe, or inner layer, of the wall. In concrete block walls, foam liners can fill the hollow cores. This method works well, but heat can still pass through solid parts of the masonry, such as block webs or fully grouted areas, so the insulation is not as effective there.

Another option is to insulate the interior face of the wall. In this method, insulation is attached directly to the masonry and then covered with wood or metal furring strips. Gypsum wallboard is mounted on the strips as the interior finish. This setup improves thermal insulation and also leaves a space for electrical wiring and plumbing, which is a common challenge in masonry construction.
