Furnier ist ein dünnes Holzblech, das mit einer Dicke von etwa einem Achtel Zoll oder weniger hergestellt wird.
Wenn ein Stamm in eine große Drehmaschine gelegt und gegen eine lange Messerkante gedreht wird, wird nach und nach ein durchgehender Furnierstreifen abgezogen, während das Messer stetig in den Stamm eindringt, was zu einem rotativgeschnittenen Furnier führt.
Plain-Slicing, Quarter-Slicing und Rift-Slicing sind weitere Methoden, die beim Verblenden verwendet werden.
Das Schneiden von Furnier beginnt mit der Vorbereitung eines Teils eines Stammes, der als Flitch bezeichnet wird, durch Sägen.
Der Flitch wird dann sicher horizontal gegen einen stabilen beweglichen Rahmen fixiert.
Ein Furniermesser, ebenfalls horizontal montiert, wird neben dem Flitch platziert.
Bei jeder Abwärtsbewegung des Rahmens wird der Flitch gegen das Messer gedrückt, wodurch eine Furnierscheibe entsteht.
Nach jeder Aufwärtsbewegung rückt das Messer um die Dicke einer Furnierscheibe in Richtung Flitch vor. Jedes Blatt ist nur so breit wie der Abschnitt des Flitch.
Feine Verkleidungen, Schränke, Holzböden, Möbelherstellung und die Herstellung von Holzprodukten sind häufige Anwendungen für Furniere.

Veneer

Furnier bezeichnet eine dünne Holzplatte, die normalerweise in einer Dicke von etwa 3,18 mm oder weniger hergestellt wird. Dieses Material wird mit verschiedenen Methoden hergestellt, am häufigsten durch Schälen. Bei diesem Verfahren wird ein Stamm in eine große Drehbank eingespannt und gegen eine Messerschneide gedreht, wobei ein durchgehender Holzstreifen abgezogen wird, während das Messer tiefer in den rotierenden Stamm eindringt und ein zusammenhängendes, endloses Furnier erzeugt.

Andere Furniertechniken sind Glatt-, Viertel- und Radialschnitt. Diese Methoden beginnen mit der Vorbereitung eines Stammsegments, das als Flitch bezeichnet wird und auf die gewünschte Größe gesägt wird. Der Flitch wird dann horizontal an einem beweglichen Rahmen befestigt. Daneben schneidet ein horizontales Furniermesser durch den Flitch, während sich der Rahmen nach unten bewegt, und erzeugt ein dünnes Furnierblatt. Nach jedem Schnitt rückt das Messer um die Dicke einer Furnierscheibe näher an den Flitch heran, wodurch eine gleichmäßige Dicke über alle Blätter hinweg gewährleistet wird.

Furniere werden aufgrund ihrer Ästhetik und Vielseitigkeit häufig in verschiedenen Anwendungen eingesetzt. Sie werden häufig für edle Verkleidungen, Schränke, Holzböden, Möbel und die Herstellung anderer Holzprodukte verwendet. Diese Verwendungen unterstreichen die Fähigkeit des Furniers, eine ansprechende Holzoberfläche zu erzielen und gleichzeitig den Nutzen des Holzes durch Minimierung des Abfalls zu maximieren.

Veneer is a thin sheet of wood that is usually about one-eighth of an inch thick or less. It is made to show the look of wood while using timber more efficiently. Veneer is common in furniture and other finished wood products.

One common way to make veneer is rotary cutting. In this method, a log is mounted in a large lathe and spun against a knife edge. As the knife moves deeper into the turning log, it peels off a continuous strip of wood. This creates rotary-cut veneer.

Other veneer methods include plain-slicing, quarter-slicing, and rift-slicing. These techniques begin with a log section called a flitch, which is sawn to the right size. The flitch is fixed horizontally on a movable frame, and a horizontal veneer knife slices through it as the frame moves downward. After each cut, the knife moves closer by the thickness of one veneer sheet to keep the sheets even.

Veneer is used in fine paneling, cabinetry, wood flooring, and furniture making. It is also used in the manufacture of other wood products. These uses show why veneer is valued for its appearance, versatility, and ability to reduce waste from timber.
