Wenn der Beton abgedichtet ist und sein Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis weniger als 0,5 beträgt, führt die innere Trocknung zu einem Verlust von freiem Wasser.
Die Aushärtung verhindert den Wasserverlust des Betons, indem der Beton gesättigt wird, um ein angemessenes Feuchtigkeits- und Temperaturniveau aufrechtzuerhalten, das für die Fortsetzung des Hydratationsprozesses erforderlich ist. 
Nachdem der Zement seine endgültige Abbinde erreicht hat, wird mit der Aushärtung begonnen und so lange fortgesetzt, bis die Kapillaren im hydratisierten Zementleim durch das Auffüllen mit Hydratationsprodukten segmentiert werden, wodurch der Beton undurchlässig und haltbar wird.
Wenn Beton an der Luft trocknen gelassen wird, ohne auszuhärten, neigt er zum Schwinden, was zur Bildung von Oberflächenrissen führt. Zudem erreicht es nur etwa 50 Prozent der Druckfestigkeit von kontinuierlich feuchtgehärtetem Beton.
Je länger die Aushärtungsdauer ist, desto höher ist die Druckfestigkeit des Betons.

Die Nachbehandlung beginnt, nachdem der Zement die endgültige Festigkeit erreicht hat. Beton, der ohne Behandlung trocknet, kann schwinden und reißen und erreicht wahrscheinlich nur die Hälfte der Festigkeit von Beton, der über 28 Tage kontinuierlich ausgehärtet wird. Die Dauer der Nachbehandlung korreliert direkt mit der endgültigen Druck- und Zugfestigkeit des Betons, was die Bedeutung dieses Verfahrens nicht nur für die Festigkeit, sondern auch für die Gewährleistung anderer wünschenswerter Eigenschaften wie Haltbarkeit, Wasserdichtigkeit, Abriebfestigkeit und Frost-Tau-Beständigkeit unterstreicht. Dieser Effekt ist bei dünneren Strukturelementen und Mischungen mit hohem Zementgehalt stärker ausgeprägt, während Leichtbeton weniger betroffen ist. Darüber hinaus wird Luftporenbeton weniger durch die Aushärtungsbedingungen beeinflusst als Beton ohne Luftporen.

Curing helps concrete gain strength after it has set. It keeps the concrete moist and at the right temperature so cement hydration can continue. Hydration is the process where cement reacts with water in the water-filled capillary pores and forms the products that fill spaces in the paste.

Dry air can interrupt this process by pulling water from the concrete surface. Concrete with a water-cement ratio below 0.5 can also lose water through self-desiccation, which means internal water is used up as hydration continues. Curing reduces this water loss by keeping the surface saturated.

Curing begins after the cement reaches final set. If concrete is allowed to dry without curing, it may shrink and crack. It may also reach only about half the strength of concrete that is continuously cured for 28 days.

The length of curing affects the final compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete. It also helps improve durability, water tightness, abrasion resistance, and freeze-thaw resistance. The effect is stronger in thin structural elements and in mixes with a high cement content. Lightweight aggregate concrete is less affected, and air-entrained concrete is less influenced by curing conditions than non-air-entrained concrete.
