Rissbildung im Beton resultiert aus der erhöhten Durchlässigkeit, wodurch Wasser mit Sulfat in die Struktur eindringen kann.
Das infiltrierte Sulfat bildet Calciumsulfat und Calciumsulfoaluminat, die mehr Platz beanspruchen, wodurch sich gehärteter Beton ausdehnt und auseinanderbricht, was zu Problemen wie der Verschiebung von Gebäudewänden aufgrund des seitlichen Drucks einer expandierenden Platte führt.
Der Boden oder das Grundwasser ist die übliche Quelle für Sulfate wie Natrium-, Kalium-, Magnesium-, Ammonium- und Calciumsulfate, die bei Kontakt mit Beton zu Schäden führen.
Labortests für die Beständigkeit von Beton gegen Sulfatangriff umfassen das Eintauchen oder abwechselnde Benetzen und Trocknen von Proben in Natrium- oder Magnesiumsulfatlösungen oder eine Kombination aus beiden.
Die Auswirkungen werden anhand des Festigkeitsverlusts, der Ausdehnung, des Gewichtsverlusts oder der visuellen Untersuchung der Probe gemessen.
Die Verwendung von sulfatbeständigem Zement oder die Reduzierung des Calciumhydroxids in hydratisiertem Zementleim und das Gießen von dichtem Beton mit einem niedrigeren Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis stärkt die Abwehr von Beton gegen Sulfatangriffe.

Sulfate Attack on Concrete

Sulfatangriff auf Beton ist ein Zersetzungsprozess, der durch eine weißliche Verfärbung gekennzeichnet ist, die an den Kanten und Ecken beginnt und von Rissbildung und Abplatzen begleitet wird. Dieses Phänomen tritt auf, wenn Sulfate mit den Bestandteilen von gehärtetem Beton reagieren und Verbindungen wie Calciumsulfat und Calciumsulfoaluminat bilden, die mehr Platz einnehmen als die Stoffe, die sie ersetzen, wodurch der Beton sich ausdehnt und bricht.


 Sulfate aus Quellen wie Erde, Grundwasser oder Industrieabwässern dringen in den Beton ein und ihre Reaktion erzeugt Gips und Ettringit. Diese Reaktion ähnelt der bei der Zementherstellung, wo Gips durch Reaktion mit Tricalciumaluminat die Blitzhärtung verhindert. Bei gehärtetem Beton ist diese Reaktion jedoch unerwünscht, da sie zu Strukturschäden führen kann.


 Die Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Sulfatangriff ist ein kritischer Aspekt, der normalerweise durch Eintauchen von Betonproben in Sulfatlösungen getestet wird. Mit dieser Methode können Veränderungen an der Probe beobachtet werden, wie z. B. Festigkeitsverlust, Ausdehnung und Gewichtsverlust. Eine visuelle Inspektion ist auch ein wertvolles Mittel zur Erkennung von Schäden. Die Verwendung von Zement mit geringem Tricalciumaluminatgehalt, wie z. B. sulfatbeständiger Zement und Mischzement, kann die Widerstandsfähigkeit des Betons gegen Sulfatangriff erheblich verbessern. Die Haltbarkeit von Beton gegen Sulfatangriff hängt auch von einem niedrigen Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis für eine geringe Durchlässigkeit ab, ein Faktor, der für die Verringerung der Schadenswahrscheinlichkeit entscheidend ist.

Concrete damage from sulfate exposure starts with a whitish discoloration, often first seen at the edges and corners. As the attack continues, the concrete can crack and spall. This deterioration happens when sulfates react with hardened concrete and create new compounds that take up more space than the materials they replace.

Sulfates may enter concrete from soil, groundwater, or industrial effluents. Inside the concrete, they can form calcium sulfate and calcium sulfoaluminate. The reaction also produces gypsum and ettringite, which expand and disrupt the hardened structure.

This process is related to the role of gypsum during cement manufacture. There, gypsum reacts with tricalcium aluminate to help prevent flash set. In hardened concrete, the same kind of reaction becomes harmful and can weaken the structure.

Engineers test sulfate resistance by immersing concrete samples in sulfate solutions. They then look for strength reduction, expansion, and weight loss. Visual inspection is also important because surface changes can help reveal damage.

Concrete can resist sulfate attack better when it uses cement with low tricalcium aluminate content. Sulfate-resisting cement and blended cement are both useful options. A low water-cement ratio also helps by lowering permeability, which reduces the chance of sulfate damage.
