Beton in Gezeitenzonen zersetzt sich durch ständige Nass-Trocken-Zyklen erheblich, während Unterwasserbeton weniger betroffen ist.
Meerwasserschäden an Beton werden reduziert, wenn Poren mit Magnesiumhydroxid verstopfen und den Eintritt blockieren.
Magnesiumhydroxid entsteht mit Gips aus der Reaktion von Magnesiumsulfat im Meerwasser mit Calciumhydroxid im Beton.
Manchmal kann Meerwasser Betonschäden mit Salzaufnahme verursachen, was zu Rissen im Beton um die korrodierte Bewehrung herum führt.
Um Seewasser standzuhalten, benötigt Stahlbeton eine Abdeckung von 2 bis 3 Zoll für die Bewehrung und gut verdichteten Planbeton mit 600 lbs/yd³ Zement über und 500 lbs/yd³ unter der Wasserlinie.

Effect of Sea Water on Concrete

Beton, der Meerwasser ausgesetzt ist, kann sich zersetzen, beispielsweise durch die Auflösung von Ettringit und Gips, wodurch die Porosität des Materials zunimmt und seine Festigkeit abnimmt. Im Gegensatz dazu kann die Kristallisation von Salzen in den Poren des Betons zu einer Ausdehnung führen, insbesondere oberhalb der Wasserlinie, wo Verdunstung auftritt. Diese Ausdehnung tritt jedoch nur dann auf, wenn Meerwasser, das durch die Durchlässigkeit des Betons ermöglicht wird, in die Struktur eindringen kann.


 Beton in Wechselwasserzonen, die regelmäßigen Zyklen von Benetzung und Austrocknung unterliegen, ist besonders gefährdet und neigt dazu, stärker zu zerfallen als Bereiche, die dauerhaft unter Wasser bleiben. Der Schaden durch Meerwasser wird durch die Ablagerung von Magnesiumhydroxid etwas gemildert, das sich im Beton durch die Reaktion von Magnesiumsulfat mit Calciumhydroxid bildet und zu verstopften Poren und verringerter Porosität führt.


 Neben chemischen Einflüssen kann Beton in Meeresumgebungen auch durch Frost, Wellengang und Abrieb physisch beschädigt werden. Diese physischen Schäden können die Auswirkungen chemischer Zersetzung verschlimmern, insbesondere wenn vom Beton absorbierte Salze zur Korrosion des Bewehrungsstahls beitragen.


 Um Schäden durch Seewasser vorzubeugen, werden ähnliche Maßnahmen wie gegen Sulfatangriffe empfohlen. Dazu gehört die Verwendung von Beton mit geringer Durchlässigkeit und die Gewährleistung einer angemessenen Überdeckung von mindestens 5,08 bis 7,62 Zentimetern über den Bewehrungsstäben. Ein Zementgehalt von 355,97 Kilogramm pro Kubikmeter oberhalb der Wasserlinie und 296,64 Kilogramm pro Kubikmeter unterhalb sowie ein Wasser-Zement-Verhältnis von nicht mehr als 0,40 bis 0,45 werden empfohlen. Darüber hinaus sind eine gründliche Verdichtung des Betons und präzise handwerkliche Arbeit an Baufugen entscheidend, um die Haltbarkeit von Beton gegen Seewasserangriffe zu verbessern.

Seawater can damage concrete by changing its chemistry, increasing porosity, and lowering strength. In marine settings, concrete is exposed to dissolved salts and repeated wetting, so its durability depends on how much water can enter the material.

One major form of damage is the breakdown of ettringite and gypsum, two concrete minerals that can dissolve in seawater. As these materials are lost, the concrete becomes more porous. Salt can also crystallize inside pores, especially above the waterline where evaporation is stronger, and that crystallization can force the concrete to expand.

That expansion only happens when seawater gets into the concrete through its pore system. Concrete in the tidal zone, where it is repeatedly wet and dried, is often damaged more than concrete that stays fully submerged. Seawater attack is partly reduced when magnesium hydroxide forms inside the concrete. It forms from the reaction of magnesium sulfate with calcium hydroxide and can clog pores, which lowers porosity.

Marine concrete can also be harmed by physical forces such as frost, wave action, and abrasion. These effects can make chemical damage worse. Salt that enters the concrete may also help corrode reinforcing steel, which weakens the structure even further.

Protection starts with low-permeability concrete, so seawater has a harder time entering the structure. Recommended practice also includes at least 2 to 3 inches of concrete cover over reinforcement bars. A cement content of 600 pounds per cubic yard above the waterline and 500 pounds per cubic yard below, along with a water-cement ratio no higher than 0.40 to 0.45, helps improve durability. Good compaction and careful construction joints are also important.
