Im Inneren einer Betonmasse schützt eine hohe Alkalität von Calciumhydroxid mit einem pH-Wert von etwa 13 die Stahlbewehrung vor Korrosion, indem sie eine schützende Eisenoxidschicht bildet, ein Zustand, der als Passivität bezeichnet wird.
Durch unterschiedliche elektrochemische Potentiale bilden sich auf der Stahloberfläche anodische und kathodische Bereiche.
Diese Bereiche werden durch die Salzlösung in hydratisiertem Zement überbrückt, die als Elektrolyt wirkt.
Positiv geladene Eisenionen von der Anode lösen sich in der Salzlösung auf.
Im Gegensatz dazu wandern negativ geladene Elektronen zur Kathode, werden vom Elektrolyten absorbiert und reagieren mit Wasser und Sauerstoff zu Hydroxylionen.
Eisenhydroxid entsteht, wenn sich die Hydroxylionen mit den Eisenionen verbinden. Die anschließende Oxidation von Eisenhydroxid führt zur Bildung von Rost.
Darüber hinaus bilden Chloridionen im umgebenden Zementleim an anodischen Stellen Salzsäure, die die Schutzschicht des Stahls aufbrechen und Lochfraßkorrosion verursachen.
Nachdem der Stahl rostet, nimmt er an Volumen zu und übt einen Druck aus, der zu Rissen und Abplatzungen des Betons führen kann.
Die Verwendung von epoxidbeschichtetem oder verzinktem Stahl oder die Verringerung der Durchlässigkeit von Beton kann die Stahlkorrosion verringern.

Die Korrosion von Stahlbewehrung in Beton ist ein Prozess, der von den inhärenten Eigenschaften des Materials und externen Faktoren beeinflusst wird. Der hohe pH-Wert von etwa 13, der durch das im Beton vorhandene Calciumhydroxid bedingt ist, schützt die Stahlbewehrung zunächst, indem er die Bildung einer passiven Eisenoxidschicht auf ihrer Oberfläche fördert.


 Mit der Zeit und unter bestimmten Bedingungen wie Carbonatisierung, Chlorideintritt und Rissbildung kann dieser Schutzzustand jedoch beeinträchtigt werden. Stahl hat Bereiche mit unterschiedlichen elektrochemischen Potenzialen, die als anodische und kathodische Bereiche bezeichnet werden. Der hydratisierte, salzhaltige Zementleim fungiert als Elektrolyt, der diese Bereiche verbindet. In den anodischen Bereichen löst sich Eisen aus dem Stahl als positiv geladene Ionen im Elektrolyt auf, während in den kathodischen Bereichen Elektronen in Reaktionen verbraucht werden, an denen Wasser und Sauerstoff aus dem umgebenden Beton beteiligt sind, wodurch Hydroxylionen entstehen.


 Diese Hydroxylionen verbinden sich mit dem gelösten Eisen und bilden Eisenhydroxid, das weiter oxidiert und zu Rost wird. Das Vorhandensein von Chloridionen verschlimmert diesen Prozess und führt zu lokaler Lochkorrosion durch die Bildung von Salzsäure, die die schützende Eisenoxidschicht angreift. Diese Korrosion kann den Stahl ausdehnen und dazu führen, dass der Beton Risse bekommt und abplatzt.


 Zu den vorbeugenden Maßnahmen gegen die Korrosion von Stahlbewehrungen gehören das Auftragen von Schutzbeschichtungen, beispielsweise aus Epoxidharz oder Zink, auf den Stahl selbst oder die Verbesserung der Betonqualität, um dessen Durchlässigkeit zu verringern und so das Eindringen korrosiver Stoffe zu verhindern.

Steel reinforcement in concrete can corrode when its protective environment changes. Fresh concrete is highly alkaline because of calcium hydroxide, with a pH of about 13. That high pH helps form a passive iron oxide layer on the steel surface, which slows corrosion.

Over time, carbonation, chloride ingress, and cracking can weaken this protection. Concrete contains hydrated cement paste with salts, and it acts as an electrolyte. Different areas of the steel then behave as anodic and cathodic regions, which creates a small electrochemical cell.

At the anodic regions, iron dissolves into the electrolyte as positively charged ions. At the cathodic regions, electrons are used in reactions with water and oxygen in the surrounding concrete to form hydroxyl ions. These hydroxyl ions combine with the dissolved iron to make ferric hydroxide, which then oxidizes into rust.

Chloride ions make the problem worse. They can cause localized pitting corrosion by forming hydrochloric acid that attacks the protective iron oxide layer. As rust builds up, the steel expands and can crack the concrete, leading to spalling.

Corrosion can be reduced in a few ways. Protective coatings such as epoxy or zinc can be applied to the steel. Another option is to improve concrete quality so it is less permeable and slows the entry of corrosive agents.
