Es gibt zwei Haupttypen der Viskosität: dynamisch und kinematisch. Die dynamische Viskosität misst die Kraft, die erforderlich ist, um eine Fluidschicht über eine andere zu bewegen.
Zum Beispiel widersteht Honig beim Rühren dem Löffel mehr als Wasser. Die kinematische Viskosität ist das Verhältnis der dynamischen Viskosität eines Fluids zu seiner Dichte und beschreibt, wie sich das Fluid unter der Schwerkraft ausbreitet.
Die meisten gängigen Flüssigkeiten, wie Wasser und Luft, haben unabhängig von der aufgewendeten Kraft eine konstante Viskosität.
Einige Flüssigkeiten, wie z. B. Ketchup, ändern jedoch ihre Viskosität je nach der ausgeübten Kraft; Ketchup fließt leichter, wenn die Flasche geschüttelt wird.
Die Temperatur beeinflusst die Viskosität erheblich, was bei der Konstruktion von Rohrleitungen, in denen das Öl reibungslos fließen muss, von entscheidender Bedeutung ist.
Im Gegensatz dazu zeigt warme Luft in der Sauna, wie höhere Temperaturen die Viskosität von Gasen erhöhen.

Um das Verhalten von Fluiden genau vorhersagen zu können, müssen diese Temperatureffekte berücksichtigt werden, was bei der Konstruktion von Systemen wie Pipelines und Automotoren von entscheidender Bedeutung ist. In Pipelines muss das Öl reibungslos fließen, während in Automotoren die richtige Ölviskosität für eine ordnungsgemäße Schmierung und Effizienz sorgt. Dieses Verständnis hilft Ingenieuren, Systeme bei unterschiedlichen Temperaturen effektiver zu konstruieren und zu betreiben.

Viscosity describes how much a fluid resists flow and deformation. It comes from internal friction between fluid layers that move past each other. Dynamic viscosity, shown by the Greek letter mu (μ), measures the force needed to move one layer over another.

Newtonian fluids, such as water and air, have a linear relationship between shearing stress and the rate of shearing strain. Their viscosity stays constant, even when the applied stress changes. Non-Newtonian fluids, like ketchup, toothpaste, and quicksand, do not behave this way. Their viscosity changes as the shear rate changes.

Temperature also has a strong effect on viscosity. For liquids, higher temperature lowers viscosity because intermolecular forces weaken and the fluid flows more easily. Heated syrup is a simple example. It pours more readily when warm than when it is cold.

For gases, the pattern is different. Higher temperature increases viscosity because molecular activity and momentum exchange between layers rise. Warm air can feel thicker, like the air in a sauna. Engineers need to account for these temperature effects when predicting fluid behavior.

This is important in systems such as pipelines and car engines. Oil in a pipeline must move smoothly. In a car engine, the right oil viscosity helps with lubrication and efficiency. Understanding viscosity helps engineers design and operate these systems under changing temperatures.
