Eine Stahlnadel oder eine Rasierklinge kann auf dem Wasser schwimmen, wenn sie aufgrund der Oberflächenspannung, die an der Grenzfläche zwischen einer Flüssigkeit und einem Gas oder zwei Flüssigkeiten entsteht, die sich nicht vermischen, vorsichtig platziert wird.
Durch die Oberflächenspannung verhält sich die flüssige Oberfläche wie eine gespannte elastische Membran und stützt so das Objekt.
Die Oberflächenspannung entsteht durch Kohäsionskräfte, die zwischen flüssigen Molekülen wirken. Moleküle in der Flüssigkeit sind gleichmäßig von anderen Molekülen umgeben, was zu ausgeglichenen Kräften in alle Richtungen führt.
Auf der anderen Seite erfahren Moleküle an der Oberfläche eine unausgeglichene Kraft in Richtung des Inneren der Flüssigkeit, wodurch ein Hauteffekt auf der Oberfläche entsteht.
Die Intensität dieser Kohäsionskräfte pro Längeneinheit wird als Oberflächenspannung bezeichnet. Die Oberflächenspannung variiert je nach Temperatur und Art der Flüssigkeit und nimmt mit steigender Temperatur ab.
Die Oberflächenspannung ist entscheidend für Prozesse wie die Bildung von Tröpfchen. In Bewässerungssystemen bildet Wasser Tröpfchen, die sich gleichmäßig über die Pflanzen verteilen lassen.
Die Kohäsionskräfte im Wasser tragen dazu bei, die Tröpfchenform beizubehalten, bis sie eine Oberfläche berührt, und sorgen so für eine effiziente Wassernutzung und -verteilung.

Die Oberflächenspannung ist eine grundlegende Eigenschaft von Flüssigkeiten und tritt an der Grenzefläche zwischen einer Flüssigkeit und einem Gas oder zwischen zwei nicht miteinander mischbaren Flüssigkeiten auf. Dieses Phänomen entsteht durch die Kohäsionskräfte zwischen den Molekülen an der Oberfläche der Flüssigkeit und erzeugt einen Effekt, der einer gedehnten elastischen Membran ähnelt. Innerhalb jeder Flüssigkeit werden Moleküle von benachbarten Molekülen in alle Richtungen gleichmäßig angezogen, aber Moleküle an der Oberfläche erfahren eine Nettokraft nach innen, was zu Oberflächenspannung führt.

Die Oberflächenspannung variiert je nach Flüssigkeitsart und -temperatur und nimmt normalerweise mit steigender Temperatur ab. Höhere Temperaturen verringern die molekulare Kohäsion und damit die Oberflächenspannung. Diese Eigenschaft ist entscheidend für die Erklärung der Bildung von Tröpfchen, Blasen und des Verhaltens von Flüssigkeitsstrahlen. Beispielsweise bilden Wassertröpfchen kugelförmige Formen, um die Oberfläche zu minimieren, was die Rolle der Oberflächenspannung bei der Energiereduzierung veranschaulicht.

Kapillarwirkung, ein weiterer Effekt der Oberflächenspannung, wird beobachtet, wenn sich eine Flüssigkeit in einem dünnen Rohr im Vergleich zum umgebenden Flüssigkeitsspiegel auf- oder abwärts bewegt. Der Durchmesser des Rohrs beeinflusst die Höhe, die die Flüssigkeit im Rohr erreicht; schmalere Rohre führen zu höheren Anstiegen.

Die Oberflächenspannung ermöglicht es auch leichten Objekten, auf einer Flüssigkeitsoberfläche zu schwimmen. Eine Stahlnadel kann beispielsweise auf dem Wasser schwimmen, wenn sie sanft darauf gelegt wird, da die Oberflächenspannung sie trägt. Ebenso nutzen Insekten wie Wasserläufer die Oberflächenspannung, um auf dem Wasser zu laufen, ohne zu sinken.

Surface Tension of Fluid

Surface tension helps explain why water forms drops, supports small objects, and moves in thin tubes. It is a property of fluids at the boundary between a liquid and a gas, or between two immiscible liquids. At the surface, molecules are pulled inward by neighboring molecules. That inward pull makes the surface act a little like a stretched elastic membrane.

Inside a fluid, molecules are attracted in all directions. Surface molecules do not have the same balance of forces. They feel a net inward force, and that is what creates surface tension. The strength of this effect depends on the fluid, and it usually gets lower as temperature increases.

Higher temperature reduces molecular cohesion, which means the molecules hold together less strongly. Lower cohesion leads to lower surface tension. This change helps explain the behavior of droplets, bubbles, and liquid jets. Water droplets often become spherical because that shape minimizes surface area and lowers energy.

Surface tension also shows up in capillary action. In a thin tube, a liquid can rise above or fall below the level of the surrounding liquid. The tube diameter matters. Narrower tubes produce a higher rise in the liquid.

This same property can support light objects on water. A steel needle can float if it is placed gently on the surface. In the same way, water striders use surface tension to walk on water without sinking.
