Leveling mistakes can occur when the line-of-sight of the telescope is partially obstructed, leading to incorrect level rod readings.Mistakes also happen when the surveyor, after relocating the level, takes a reading to the level rod positioned at the wrong turning point.&#160;Calling out and verifying rod readings using a target can prevent recording incorrect values in field notes.&#160;To avoid leveling errors, the rod must be held vertically, which is ensured by centering the bubble in the circular levels given on the rod.The base of the level rod should be clean of any mud and be held on firm ground.When extending the level rod, ensure the upper part is properly secured, and retract it carefully after taking the reading.Equal backsight and foresight distances between the level rod and instrument minimize errors.&#160;Finally, centering the bubble on the level properly, focusing the telescope correctly, checking the telescope's line of sight is parallel to the level tube, and the horizontal cross-hair is perpendicular to the vertical axis of the level, helps avoid errors in leveling.

Diese neue Position hat eine leicht andere H&#246;he, was zu einer falschen Vorblickmessung f&#252;hrt. Infolgedessen wird der H&#246;henunterschied zwischen den Punkten A und B falsch berechnet.
Fehler in Feldnotizen: Beim Aufzeichnen der Messwerte schreibt der Vermesser 0,785 m statt 0,857 m. Dieser &#220;bertragungsfehler verf&#228;lscht den H&#246;henunterschied noch weiter.

H&#228;ufige Fehler
Nivellierlatte nicht vertikal: Am Standpunkt neigt sich die Messlatte aufgrund von Bodenunebenheiten leicht. Der kleinste Messwert der Nivellierlatte, der Vertikalit&#228;t anzeigen w&#252;rde, wird nicht erkannt. Diese Neigung erh&#246;ht die gemessene H&#246;he und verf&#228;lscht H&#246;henunterschiede.
Ungleiche R&#252;ckblick- und Vorblickentfernungen: Das Instrument wird viel n&#228;her am R&#252;ckblick (Punkt A) als am Vorblick (Punkt B) platziert. Beispielsweise betr&#228;gt die R&#252;ckblickentfernung 5,0 m, w&#228;hrend die Vorblickentfernung 25,0 m betr&#228;gt. Dieses Ungleichgewicht kann aufgrund verst&#228;rkter Auswirkungen der Erdkr&#252;mmung und -brechung zu Ungenauigkeiten bei der berechneten H&#246;he f&#252;hren.
Libelle nicht zentriert: Die Libelle auf dem Nivellierinstrument wird w&#228;hrend der Einrichtung nicht richtig zentriert. Dies f&#252;hrt dazu, dass die Sichtlinie leicht geneigt ist, was zu konsistenten Fehlern bei R&#252;ckblick- und Vorblickmessungen f&#252;hrt.
Umweltfaktoren: Starke Winde sch&#252;tteln das Nivellierinstrument und erschweren die Aufrechterhaltung einer gleichm&#228;&#223;igen Sichtlinie. Hitzewellen von der Sonne k&#246;nnen auch die Sicht des Teleskops verzerren, insbesondere bei gro&#223;en Sichtentfernungen, was zu Schwankungen bei den Messlattenmessungen f&#252;hrt.
Wenn diese Fehler und Irrt&#252;mer gleichzeitig auftreten, kann der kumulative Effekt zu einem erheblich ungenauen H&#246;henunterschied zwischen den Punkten A und B f&#252;hren. Beispielsweise k&#246;nnte der tats&#228;chliche H&#246;henunterschied 3.000 m betragen, aber das Vermessungsteam berechnet aufgrund der zusammengesetzten Fehler 3.450 m, was zu einem Fehler von +0,450 m f&#252;hrt.

Common Leveling Mistakes and Errors

Leveling errors in survey measurements can change the calculated elevation difference between Point A and Point B. A survey team uses a leveling instrument and a leveling rod to measure uneven terrain. When several mistakes happen during the same run, the final result can be far from the true value.

One common mistake is misreading the rod. At Point A, the rod is partly hidden by tall grass during a backsight reading, which is the first reading taken from a known point. Instead of 1.135 m, the instrumentman records 1.735 m because the crosshair is matched to the wrong graduation mark. That 0.600 m error then affects every later measurement.

Another problem is incorrect turning point handling. A turning point is the spot where the rod is moved after the instrument is relocated. If the rodman shifts the rod to a new location with a slightly different elevation, the foresight reading becomes wrong and the elevation difference between Points A and B is miscalculated. Field note errors can add more trouble too, such as writing 0.785 m instead of 0.857 m. At Point B, a missecured rod extension can also collapse slightly during the reading and change the result.

Some errors come from setup and field conditions. The rod at the turning point must stay vertical, but uneven ground can make it lean. If the smallest reading is not used to confirm vertical alignment, the measured height increases and the elevation difference is distorted. Unequal backsight and foresight distances can also reduce accuracy. For example, a 5.0 m backsight and a 25.0 m foresight can increase the effects of Earth’s curvature and refraction. A bubble tube that is not centered leaves the line of sight slightly inclined, and wind or heat waves can shake or blur the instrument’s view.

These problems can build up fast. If several occur together, a true elevation difference of 3.000 m may be calculated as 3.450 m, which creates a +0.450 m error. To reduce these mistakes, survey teams should clear the line of sight, mark turning points, check field notes, keep the rod vertical and properly extended, balance backsight and foresight distances, and protect the instrument from wind and extreme weather.
