Wenn ein stationärer Körper ganz oder teilweise in eine Flüssigkeit eingetaucht ist, übt die Flüssigkeit eine Kraft auf den Körper aus, die als Auftriebskraft bezeichnet wird.
Diese Kraft wirkt über einen Punkt, der als Auftriebszentrum bekannt ist.
Die Auftriebskraft ist gleich dem Gewicht der vom Körper verdrängten Flüssigkeit und wirkt senkrecht nach oben, dieses Phänomen ist als Archimedisches Prinzip bekannt.
Ein Körper befindet sich in einem stabilen Gleichgewicht, wenn er nach einer Verschiebung in seine ursprüngliche Position zurückkehrt, die seine Stabilität definiert.
Wenn sich der Körper neigt, verschiebt sich das Zentrum des Auftriebs, und die Achse des Körpers richtet sich mit der vertikalen Linie durch das neue Auftriebszentrum aus, das als Metazentrum bekannt ist und die Stabilität des Körpers bestimmt.
Ein vollständig untergetauchter Körper bleibt bei kleinen Umdrehungen im stabilen Gleichgewicht, wenn der Schwerpunkt unter dem Auftriebsschwerpunkt liegt.
Wenn ein Schwimmkörper kippt, bewegt sich die Auftriebskraft, um ein Wiederherstellungspaar mit dem Gewicht zu erzeugen, selbst wenn der Schwerpunkt über dem Auftriebsschwerpunkt liegt.
Bei großen, schlanken Körpern kann es jedoch zu einem Umkippen des Paares kommen, was zu Instabilität führt.

Buoyancy and stability explain how submerged and floating bodies behave in a fluid. When a body is fully or partly under water and stays still, the fluid pushes upward on it. That upward push is called the buoyant force.

The buoyant force acts through the center of buoyancy. This is the center of the displaced fluid volume. Archimedes’ principle says the buoyant force equals the weight of the fluid displaced by the body.

Stability describes whether a body can return to its original position after it is moved. For submerged bodies, stability depends on the center of gravity and the center of buoyancy. If the center of gravity is below the center of buoyancy, the body stays in stable equilibrium.

Floating bodies become stable through the balance between buoyant force and weight. If the body tilts, the center of buoyancy shifts. That shift creates a restoring couple that turns the body back toward equilibrium. Tall, slender bodies may instead develop an overturning couple, which can make them unstable and lead to capsizing.
