Bei inkompressiblen Flüssigkeiten bleibt das Produkt aus Strömungsfläche und Geschwindigkeit über den gesamten Strömungsweg konstant und passt sich an Änderungen der Querschnitte an.
Wenn die Querschnittsfläche abnimmt, nimmt die Geschwindigkeit des Fluids zu, um eine konstante Durchflussrate aufrechtzuerhalten.
Diese Beziehung ist entscheidend für die Analyse von Systemen wie Wasserleitungen, Regenwassermanagement und offenen Kanälen, um Stabilität und Effizienz in verschiedenen Strömungsanwendungen zu gewährleisten.
In Wasserversorgungssystemen trägt die Kontinuitätsgleichung zur Aufrechterhaltung einer gleichmäßigen Verteilung bei, indem sie Geschwindigkeitsänderungen vorhersagt, wenn sich die Rohre verengen, was für die Vermeidung von Druckabfällen unerlässlich ist.
Es hilft bei der Planung von Rückhaltebecken für die Regenwasserbewirtschaftung. Wenn während eines Sturms Abfluss in das Becken gelangt, muss die Abflussrate mit der Zuflussrate übereinstimmen und angepasst werden, um Überschwemmungen flussabwärts zu verhindern.
Bei offenen Kanälen wie Flüssen oder Kanälen hilft die Kontinuitätsgleichung zu verstehen, wie sich Schwankungen in der Breite oder Tiefe auf Wasserstände und Fließgeschwindigkeiten auswirken. Dieses Verständnis ist für die Entwicklung effektiver Hochwasserschutz- und Navigationssysteme von entscheidender Bedeutung.

Dieses Prinzip gilt für Systeme, bei denen Flüssigkeit durch unterschiedliche Querschnittsflächen fließt, wie Düsen, Spritzen und Rohre.

Die Massendurchflussrate wird wie folgt ausgedrückt:

Bei inkompressibler Strömung, bei der die Dichte konstant bleibt, vereinfacht sich die Kontinuitätsgleichung zu:

Diese Gleichung veranschaulicht, dass die Geschwindigkeit zunimmt, wenn die Querschnittsfläche abnimmt, und umgekehrt, wodurch die Massenerhaltung gewährleistet wird. Ein Beispiel ist die Strömung durch eine Spritze. Wenn der Kolben die Flüssigkeit durch eine Düse komprimiert, zeigt die Kontinuitätsgleichung, dass die Auslassgeschwindigkeit doppelt so hoch sein muss wie die Einlassgeschwindigkeit, wenn die Auslassfläche halb so groß ist wie die Einlassfläche.

Ein weiteres Beispiel ist die Strömung in einem Schwerkrafttank. Die Anwendung der Bernoulli-Gleichung und der Kontinuitätsgleichung auf Punkte entlang der Strömung hilft bei der Bestimmung der Auslassgeschwindigkeit und des Volumenstroms:

Fluid flow and area changes are linked by the continuity equation. For a steady flow of an incompressible fluid in a confined system, the mass flow rate stays constant. This idea is useful in nozzles, syringes, and pipes where the cross-sectional area changes.

The mass flow rate is written as an equation that connects density, area, and velocity. For incompressible flow, the density stays the same, so the equation becomes simpler. When the area gets smaller, the fluid speed must increase. When the area gets larger, the speed must decrease. This keeps mass conserved as the fluid moves.

A syringe shows this relationship clearly. When the plunger pushes fluid through a nozzle, the outlet speed rises if the outlet area is smaller than the inlet area. If the outlet area is half the inlet area, the outlet velocity is twice the inlet velocity.

A gravity-driven tank gives another example. Here, Bernoulli's equation and the continuity equation can be used together at points along the flow. They help find the outlet velocity and the volumetric flow rate. In this setup, h is the fluid height, D is the tank diameter, and d is the outlet diameter. The flow rate approaches a stable value as the outlet diameter becomes small compared with the tank diameter.
