Flüsse können basierend auf der Dimensionalität kategorisiert werden. In einer eindimensionalen Strömung ändern sich Eigenschaften wie Geschwindigkeit und Druck in eine einzige Richtung, wie sie bei Wasser zu sehen ist, das sich durch ein gerades Rohr bewegt.
Bei der zweidimensionalen Strömung geht es um Längen- und Tiefenvariationen, wie z. B. Wasser, das in einem offenen Kanal fließt.
Die dreidimensionale Strömung ist komplexer und weist Schwankungen in alle drei Richtungen auf, z. B. wenn der Wind ein Gebäude zirkuliert.
Strömungen werden auch anhand ihrer Geschwindigkeit und der Bewegung von Flüssigkeitspartikeln klassifiziert. Die gebräuchlichsten Arten sind stationäre und instationäre Strömungen.
Ein stetiger Fluss, z. B. Wasser, das sich durch eine Rohrleitung eines kommunalen Wasserversorgungssystems bewegt, hat flüssige Eigenschaften, die zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt im Laufe der Zeit konstant bleiben.
Eine instationäre Strömung, wie z. B. die sich ändernde Geschwindigkeit und Durchflussrate während des Regenwasserabflusses, unterliegt im Laufe der Zeit Schwankungen in den Fluideigenschaften.
Eine weitere wichtige Unterscheidung ist die laminare und turbulente Strömung. Die laminare Strömung zeichnet sich durch eine gleichmäßige, geordnete Bewegung aus, wie Wasser, das sich mit niedrigen Geschwindigkeiten durch ein kleines, glattes Rohr bewegt.
Im Gegensatz dazu handelt es sich bei turbulenten Strömungen um chaotische und unregelmäßige Strömungsbewegungen, wie sie häufig in Flüssen oder Durchlässen bei Hochwasserereignissen zu beobachten sind.

Variationen treten in zwei Richtungen auf, was die Berechnungen komplexer macht als bei eindimensionalen Strömungen. Dreidimensionale Strömungen, die am kompliziertesten sind, beinhalten Variationen in allen drei räumlichen Dimensionen: Länge, Höhe und Tiefe. Der Wind, der um Gebäude zirkuliert, demonstriert diese Art von Strömung, bei der sich die Flüssigkeitseigenschaften in mehrere Richtungen unterscheiden.

Strömungen werden auch danach klassifiziert, wie sich die Flüssigkeitseigenschaften im Laufe der Zeit ändern. Stetige Strömung beschreibt Situationen, in denen Eigenschaften wie Geschwindigkeit und Druck zu jedem Zeitpunkt im Laufe der Zeit konstant bleiben. Bei der Analyse instationärer Strömungen müssen zeitabhängige Schwankungen von Geschwindigkeit und Druck beachtet werden.

Die Unterscheidung zwischen laminarer und turbulenter Strömung ist ebenfalls wichtig. Laminare Strömungen zeichnen sich durch gleichmäßige, geordnete Flüssigkeitsbewegungen aus, wobei sich Flüssigkeitsschichten parallel und mit minimaler Vermischung bewegen. Grundwasser, das durch Bodenschichten sickert, weist häufig laminare Strömungen auf. Turbulente Strömungen hingegen sind chaotische und unregelmäßige Bewegungen, wie sie häufig bei Flüssen während Hochwasser auftreten. Flüssigkeitspartikel interagieren auf komplexe Weise und erzeugen wirbelnde Wirbel und Strudel, was die Analyse solcher Strömungen erheblich erschwert.

Fluid flow can be grouped by direction and by how it changes over time. The simplest case is one-dimensional flow. In this type, properties such as velocity and pressure change along only one axis. Water moving through a straight pipe is a common example, because changes in other directions are very small.

Two-dimensional flow changes in two directions. It varies in both length and height, so the analysis is more complex than one-dimensional flow. Air moving over a flat surface, such as a bridge deck, shows this pattern.

Three-dimensional flow is the most complex type. It involves changes in length, height, and depth. Wind moving around buildings is an example, since fluid properties can differ in multiple directions.

Flows are also classified by whether they stay the same over time. In steady flow, velocity and pressure remain constant at a point as time passes. A pipeline in a municipal water supply system is a typical example. Unsteady flow is different because fluid properties change over time. Stormwater runoff is one example, and it requires attention to time-dependent changes in velocity and pressure.

Another important split is between laminar and turbulent flow. Laminar flow is smooth and orderly, with fluid layers moving in parallel and very little mixing. Groundwater seeping through soil layers often follows this pattern. Turbulent flow is chaotic and irregular. It often appears in rivers during floods, where swirling eddies and vortices make the motion much harder to analyze.

Tracking Fluid Motion in Space and Time

Fluid flow can be described with the Eulerian and Lagrangian methods. These two approaches give different views of the same moving fluid. They are useful in science and engineering because the best method depends on the problem being studied. The Eulerian method looks at fixed points in space.
