Global Positioning System (GPS) surveying can be used to find the coordinates and elevations of park monuments. Surveyors use this method to measure precise points on Earth. In this survey, GPS receivers were used to locate two monument markers and record their height above the ground model.

The work began with mission planning. Surveyors checked satellite visibility and tried to reduce Position Dilution of Precision, or PDOP, which is a measure of how satellite geometry can affect accuracy. A geodetic control point was used as the base station. The GPS receiver was set up there, and the antenna height was recorded.

Rover GPS receivers were then placed above each monument marker. Any nearby obstructions were cleared so the receivers could see the satellites clearly. Data was collected at each site for 30 minutes using the static GPS method. PDOP values were watched during the survey to keep the data quality high.

The GPS measurements were stored in the Earth-centered, Earth-fixed, or ECEF, Cartesian coordinate system. This global system describes locations relative to Earth’s center of mass. It is compatible with geodetic models used in surveying.

After collection, correction software was used to improve the data. The software removed errors such as ionospheric delays and multipath effects, which happen when signals travel through the atmosphere or bounce off surfaces. The corrected ECEF coordinates were then converted into latitude, longitude, and ellipsoidal height. Geoid models were also applied to give accurate elevation values.

The final results were checked against the control point data. The survey reached accuracy within 2 centimeters for horizontal position and 3 centimeters for elevation. These results show how GPS can provide reliable monument locations and heights in the field.
