Dies wird als Verhältnis von Wasservolumen zur Entwässerungsrate ausgedrückt, das sich im Laufe der Zeit ändert, da beide differenzierbare Funktionen der Zeit sind.Wenn Wasser in den Tank gelangt, steigt das Gesamtvolumen leicht, während sich auch die Entwässerungsrate durch Systemanpassungen verändert. Diese kleinen Veränderungen beeinflussen den gesamten Volumen-zu-Entwässerungsquotienten.Um die Änderungsrate des Quotienten zu bestimmen, betrachtet man die Änderung des Quotienten über einen kleinen Zeitraum und teilt diese dann durch dieses Intervall.Indem ein Grenzwert eingeführt wird, wenn das Zeitintervall sich Null nähert, nähert sich Delta R ebenfalls Null, da R sich kontinuierlich mit der Zeit verändert, was den Nenner vereinfacht. Mit der Definition der Ableitungen wird die Quotientenregel abgeleitet.Sie entspricht der Entwässerungsrate multipliziert mit der Ableitung des Volumens, minus dem Volumen mal der Ableitung der Entwässerungsrate, alles geteilt durch das Quadrat der Entwässerungsrate.Dieser letzte Ausdruck zeigt, wie sich das Verhältnis des Wasservolumens zur Entwässerungsrate im Laufe der Zeit verändert. Im Allgemeinen bezieht sich dieser Ausdruck auch darauf, wie sich das Verhältnis zweier beliebiger Funktionen im Laufe der Zeit verändert.
