Inverse trigonometric functions are used to find angles from trig ratios. Standard trigonometric functions turn angles into ratios, while inverse trigonometric functions reverse that process and map a ratio back to its angle. That makes them useful whenever a problem gives distances or side lengths instead of an angle.

A function must be one-to-one to have a valid inverse. This means each input must match only one output. Trigonometric functions are not naturally one-to-one over their full domains because they are periodic, so they repeat values across intervals.

To fix that, domain restrictions are applied. The arcsine function, sin−1 x, uses the interval [-π/2, π/2], where sine is strictly increasing and one-to-one. The arccosine function, cos−1 x, uses [0, π], where cosine is strictly decreasing. The arctangent function, tan−1 x, uses (-π/2, π/2), where tangent is strictly increasing and continuous.

Other inverse trig functions also use restrictions to stay one-to-one. These include arcsecant, sec−1 x, arccosecant, csc−1 x, and arccotangent, cot−1 x. Each inverse function gives the angle that matches the original ratio within its chosen domain.

Graphically, inverse trigonometric functions can be seen as reflections of their matching trigonometric graphs across the line y = x. This symmetry shows the relationship between a function and its inverse. In practice, these functions help in triangulation, where an angle is found from the opposite and adjacent sides of a right triangle.

They are also useful in navigation. The arctangent function can help find a bearing angle when the distance to a point and the height difference are known. In physics, arcsine and arccosine can be used to calculate phase angles in wave motion or oscillations.
