In ähnlicher Weise ist auch die Funktion x zum Quadrat minus 1 stetig.Wenn zwei addiert werden, entsteht eine stetige Funktion, und die Kontinuität bleibt erhalten.In ähnlicher Weise bleibt auch bei Subtraktion, Multiplikation und Skalierung die Kontinuität erhalten, da diese Operationen keine Löcher oder Sprünge erzeugen können.Die Teilung ist ein Sonderfall. Wenn eine stetige Funktion durch eine andere geteilt wird, kann dies zu Diskontinuitäten führen, wenn der Nenner Null ist.Stell Dir eine Wasserpfeife vor, die sich sanft verjüngt. Sei g(x) die Querschnittsfläche und f(x) die Wasserdurchflussmenge. Rationale Funktionen, also Quotienten zweier Polynome, sind an allen Stellen stetig, an denen der Nenner ungleich 0 ist.
Standardfunktionen wie sin x, cos x, e^x, ln x sowie die inversen trigonometrischen Funktionen sind in ihren jeweiligen Definitionsbereichen stetig. So ist ln x auf dem Intervall (0, &#8734;) stetig, w&#228;hrend sin x und cos x f&#252;r alle reellen Werte von x stetig sind.
Ist g in a stetig und f in g(a) stetig, dann ist auch die zusammengesetzte Funktion f(g(x)) in a stetig; die Stetigkeit bleibt somit unter verschachtelten Operationen erhalten.

Continuous functions stay smooth when they are added, subtracted, multiplied by a constant, or multiplied together. If f and g are continuous at a point a, then f+g, f-g, cf, and fg are also continuous at a. This makes it possible to build more complex functions from simpler continuous parts without breaking continuity.

Polynomials are continuous for every real number. A polynomial is an expression made from sums of powers of x with constant coefficients. So polynomial graphs are continuous from negative infinity to positive infinity.

Rational functions are ratios of two polynomials. They are continuous wherever the denominator is not zero. Standard functions such as sin x, cos x, e^x, ln x, and inverse trigonometric functions are also continuous on the domains where they are defined. For example, ln x is continuous on (0, ∞), while sin x and cos x are continuous for all real x.

Continuity also carries through composition. If g is continuous at a and f is continuous at g(a), then the composite function f(g(x)) is continuous at a. This rule shows that nested functions keep continuity when each part is continuous at the right point.
