The average value of a function gives one number that summarizes how a quantity changes over a closed interval. It can also be viewed as the height of a rectangle whose area matches the net area under the curve. That net area includes both positive and negative parts of the function, so the result reflects the function’s overall behavior.

A greenhouse temperature over a 24-hour period is a practical example of this idea. The temperature may rise and fall throughout the day, but it is still useful to describe it with a single average temperature for the full time interval. To estimate that value, the interval is divided into many small subintervals of equal width.

On each small piece, a representative function value is chosen. That value becomes the height of a thin rectangle. The area of each rectangle estimates the contribution of the function over that short interval, and adding all the rectangle areas gives an estimate of the total area under the curve.

As the number of subintervals increases and the widths get smaller, the estimate becomes more accurate. In the limit, the rectangular sum approaches the exact accumulated value of the function over the interval. This limiting process is the definite integral shown above.

When the function stays positive on the interval, the average value can be pictured more simply. It is the height of a rectangle with the same area as the region under the curve. This geometric view makes it easier to understand how average value condenses a changing quantity into one representative number.
