Eine Differentialgleichung ist eine Gleichung, die eine unbekannte Funktion und eine oder mehrere ihrer Ableitungen enthält. Die Ordnung einer Differentialgleichung wird durch die in der Gleichung vorhandene Ableitung höchster Ordnung gegeben.Wenn die Gleichung nur die erste Ableitung umfasst, nennt man sie erste Ordnung. Wenn sie die zweite Ableitung beinhaltet, nennt man sie zweite Ordnung, und so weiter.Zum Beispiel kann ein Feder-Massen-System als einfacher harmonischer Oszillator modelliert werden, der die Nettokraft auf die Masse und die Wiederherstellungskraft in der Feder gleichsetzt, wie sie durch das Hooke-Gesetz für lineare Federn beschrieben wird.Die Federkraft wirkt in entgegengesetzte Richtung zur Verschiebung und ist proportional dazu, wie weit sich die Masse von ihrer Gleichgewichtsposition entfernt.Newtons zweites Gesetz verbindet die Nettokraft auf die Masse mit ihrer Beschleunigung. Die Kombination dieser beiden Beziehungen ergibt eine Gleichung, in der Masse mal Beschleunigung einer negativen Konstanten mal Verschiebung entspricht.Indem die Beschleunigung als zweite Ableitung der Verschiebung über die Zeit umgeschrieben wird, erhält man eine Differentialgleichung zweiter Ordnung.Diese zweite Ableitung verbindet die Bewegung des Systems mit einer Differentialgleichung.

In diesem idealisierten System ist eine Masse an einer Feder befestigt, die dem Hookeschen Gesetz folgt und frei von D&#xE4;mpfung sowie &#xE4;u&#xDF;eren Kr&#xE4;ften ist. Wird die Masse aus ihrer Gleichgewichtslage ausgelenkt, wirkt die Feder mit einer R&#xFC;ckstellkraft, die linear proportional zur Auslenkung ist und in entgegengesetzter Richtung wirkt. Differential equations connect a function with its derivatives. They are used to describe changing systems in science and engineering. A differential equation is classified by order, which is the highest derivative it contains. A first-order equation includes only the first derivative, while a second-order equation includes the second derivative of the unknown function.

A common second-order differential equation comes from a spring-mass system. In this idealized model, a mass is attached to a spring that follows Hooke’s Law and has no damping or external forces. When the mass moves away from equilibrium, the spring pulls it back. The restoring force is proportional to the displacement and points in the opposite direction.

Newton’s second law links that force to motion. It states that net force equals mass times acceleration. When the spring force is substituted into Newton’s law, and acceleration is written as the second derivative of displacement with respect to time, the result is the standard second-order linear differential equation for the system. This equation describes simple harmonic motion and is a key model for mechanical vibrations and oscillating systems.
