Eine Hyperbel besteht aus zwei offenen Kurven, die als Äste bezeichnet werden. Unabhängig davon, wo P in einem der beiden Zweige ausgewählt wird, bleibt dieser Unterschied gleich.Die Standardgleichung für eine Hyperbel, die am Ursprung und an der Öffnung entlang der x-Achse zentriert ist, lautet: x zum Quadrat über a zum Quadrat minus y zum Quadrat über b zum Quadrat ist gleich eins.Jeder Zweig einer Hyperbel nähert sich zwei diagonalen Linien, den sogenannten Asymptoten, die die Kurve ins Unendliche führen.Zweimal a gibt den Abstand zwischen den Eckpunkten entlang der Querachse an, während zweimal b die Länge der konjugierten Achse definiert.Die Gleichungen der Asymptoten hängen sowohl von a als auch von b ab, die die Steigungen der diagonalen Linien des zentralen Rechtecks bestimmen. Mit der Punkt-Steigungs-Formel können dann die Gleichungen der asymptoten Geraden geschrieben werden.Hyperbeln treten auch in optischen Instrumenten auf. In der Astronomie verwendet das Cassegrain-Teleskop einen parabolischen Haupt- und einen hyperbolischen Fangspiegel. Der Primärfokus fokussiert die einfallenden parallelen Strahlen, und der Sekundärfokus, der sich einen Fokus mit dem Primärfokus teilt, reflektiert sie durch ein Loch im Primärfokus zu seinem zweiten Fokus, um ein Bild zu erzeugen.

A hyperbola is a curve defined by two fixed points called foci. For any point on the curve, the absolute difference in its distances to the foci stays constant. This distance rule gives the hyperbola its shape and separates it from other conic sections.

The standard equation shows two branches that extend forever. Each branch moves closer to two asymptotes, which are lines that guide the curve as it grows. The parameters a and b control key features of the graph. The value a measures the distance from the center to each vertex along the transverse axis. The value b affects the slopes of the asymptotes.

A useful way to locate the asymptotes is to draw a rectangle centered at the origin. The rectangle has dimensions 2a by 2b. When you extend its diagonals, you get the asymptotes. Their equations match the slope pattern shown by the rectangle.

The hyperbola also has an eccentricity, written with c, that is always greater than 1. Eccentricity describes how open the hyperbola is. The foci are placed at (±c, 0). With the equation simplified, the graph is easier to plot and analyze.

Hyperbolas appear in real systems that use mirrors and precise direction. Hyperbolic mirrors help focus light in optical setups such as Cassegrain telescopes, which improves image clarity. The same geometry is useful in astronomy, engineering, and navigation, where accurate directional behavior matters.
