Logarithmische und stückweise Funktionen sind zwei wesentliche Arten von mathematischen Funktionen.Eine logarithmische Funktion ist der Kehrwert einer Exponentialfunktion und spiegelt über die Linie y gleich x. Exponentialfunktionen beginnen langsam und wachsen dann schnell, während logarithmische Funktionen zunächst schnell ansteigen und sich dann verlangsamen.Durch dieses Verhalten lassen sich große numerische Unterschiede durch logarithmische Skalierung komfortabler darstellen.Die pH-Skala, die den Säuregehalt oder die Basizität misst, verwendet beispielsweise eine logarithmische Skala.Jede Einheit auf der pH-Skala steht für eine zehnfache Änderung der Wasserstoffionenkonzentration.Auf der anderen Seite verwendet eine stückweise Funktion unterschiedliche Regeln für verschiedene Abschnitte ihres Graphen, und diese Regeln können sich je nach Eingabe schlagartig ändern.Zum Beispiel kann der Fahrpreis für ein Taxi mit zunehmender zurückgelegter Strecke in festen Schritten steigen.Der Graph einer stückweisen Funktion sieht aus wie separate Liniensegmente oder Kurven, wobei jedes Segment einer eigenen Regel folgt.Stückweise Funktionen sind nützlich, um Situationen mit Sprüngen, Pausen oder unterschiedlichem Verhalten in verschiedenen Eingabebereichen zu modellieren.

Beispielsweise kann eine Taxitarifstruktur einen pauschalen Grundpreis f&#252;r die erste Meile und einen zus&#228;tzlichen Festbetrag f&#252;r jede weitere Meile erheben. Logarithmic and piecewise functions help model real-world situations in different ways. A logarithmic function is the inverse of an exponential function. Its graph rises quickly for small x values and then flattens as x gets larger. This makes logarithms useful when data spans several orders of magnitude.

Logarithmic scales compress large ranges into compact numbers. One common example is the pH scale in chemistry. It is written as pH = −log10[H+], where [H+] is the hydrogen ion concentration. A one-unit drop in pH means a tenfold increase in acidity. Logarithmic functions also appear in information theory, sound intensity measured in decibels, and population dynamics.

Piecewise functions work differently. They are made of multiple sub-functions, and each one applies to a specific interval of the domain. In a general piecewise function, each fi(x) gives the output for its own range of x values. This setup allows a function to change abruptly when the input crosses a boundary.

A simple real-world example is a taxi fare. The ride may start with a flat base rate for the first mile and then add a fixed amount for each extra mile. The graph of a piecewise function often looks like line segments with different slopes. These functions are useful in economics, engineering, and computer science, especially when a system has thresholds, cutoffs, or conditional rules.
