The Attentional Blink

3. ejecución del experimento

	<li>Para una experiencia completa, es ideal para probar entre 10-20 participantes, pero el resultado de este experimento debería ser aparente en los datos de los participantes más individuales.</li>

Un conjunto muy importante de preguntas refiere a cómo la gente mantener la atención, es decir, la medida a que continuamente puede mantener un foco de atención de momento a momento. Ahora se sabe que una atención sostenida requiere gran esfuerzo. Cuando la atención deba centrarse rápidamente en algo que se está moviendo o cambiando muy rápidamente, el esfuerzo causa un lapso momentáneo en la atención de una vez se desactiva. Este tipo de lapso de atención se llama un parpadeo atencional. Es como el cerebro parpadea por un momento, cerrando la atención para un descanso. En 1992, un grupo de investigadores ideó un paradigma para estudiar el attentional blink y el paradigma ha llegado a ser conocido con el mismo nombre. 1 muestra algunos de los retos para mantener la atención. El procesamiento de información en un entorno que cambia rápidamente es exigente y la atención visual es necesaria para que se produzca el reconocimiento de objetos. En este experimento, se presentan una serie de imágenes, como grandes letras minúsculas negras y números en fuente Helvetica, durante 50 ms una tras otra, un procedimiento experimental llamado Presentación Visual Rápida en Serie, RSVP para abreviar. Sin embargo, el parpadeo atencional no duró mucho, como lo demuestra el rendimiento mejorado para las posiciones de retraso 4, 5 y 6. Ahora que está familiarizado con el fenómeno, veamos cómo se usa el paradigma para investigar las limitaciones básicas de la atención visual con más detalle, incluidos los tipos de cosas que pueden capturarla automáticamente, e incluso cómo la ansiedad y otros problemas de salud mental pueden desviarla. En una tarea similar de confirmación de asistencia con fotografías, se les pidió a los participantes que identificaran una imagen objetivo, una que estaba rotada en una posición inusual. Por ejemplo, se incluyó una habitación al revés como objetivo, y los participantes informaron si se trataba de una escena interior o exterior. En algunos ensayos, los investigadores agregaron una imagen de una araña al arroyo en una posición anterior al objetivo. Plantearon la hipótesis de que esto podría captar automáticamente la atención debido al miedo que induce. En este caso, razonaron que debería producir un parpadeo atencional, lo que llevaría a que se pasara por alto el objetivo rotado. De hecho, los participantes respondieron de manera inexacta cuando una araña precedió al objetivo, lo que demuestra que los objetos que inducen miedo pueden capturar automáticamente la atención y producir parpadeos atencionales. Los investigadores también han utilizado el mismo paradigma para investigar las diferencias entre las personas con fobias graves y las que solo tienen una aversión típica a las arañas. Visual attention is needed to recognize a stimulus. Early in vision, objects are not seen as whole objects. They are processed as features such as lines, corners, texture changes, color, and light. Attention helps later processing combine those features into something the brain can identify.

This makes attention a major topic in vision research. A key question is how people sustain attention over time. Sustained attention means keeping focus from moment to moment. It takes effort, especially when attention must shift very quickly to something that is moving or changing rapidly.

That effort can cause a brief lapse after attention is disengaged. This lapse is called an attentional blink. During that short pause, stimuli that appear are not perceived. Researchers use the attentional blink paradigm, named for this effect, to study how well people maintain focused visual attention.

The paradigm was first devised in 1992. It shows some of the challenges of keeping attention steady under fast-changing conditions. The method in this video demonstrates how to implement the attentional blink paradigm for studying sustained visual attention.
