<h4>Descripción general</h4> Las neuronas son el principal tipo de célula del sistema nervioso que genera y transmite señales electroquímicas. Se comunican principalmente entre sí mediante neurotransmisores en uniones específicas llamadas sinapsis. Las neuronas tienen muchas formas que a menudo se relacionan con su función, pero la mayoría comparte tres estructuras principales: un axón y dendritas que se extienden desde un cuerpo celular. <h4>Estructura y función de las neuronas.</h4> El cuerpo celular neuronal,el soma, alberga el núcleo y los orgánulos vitales para la función celular. Desde el cuerpo celular se extienden estructuras delgadas que están especializadas en recibir y enviar señales. Las dendritas suelen recibir señales mientras el axón las transmite a otras células, como otras neuronas o células musculares. El punto en el que una neurona se conecta con otra célula se llama sinapsis. Las neuronas reciben información principalmente en las terminales postsinápticas, que con frecuencia se encuentran en las espinas, pequeñas protuberancias que sobresalen de las dendritas. Estas estructuras especializadas contienen receptores de neurotransmisores y otras señales químicas. Las dendritas suelen estar muy ramificadas, lo que permite que algunas neuronas reciban decenas de miles de entradas. Los axones más largos suelen estar envueltos en una vaina grasa de mielina que aísla el axón y ayuda a mantener la señal eléctrica. La vaina de mielina es creada por la glía,otro tipo de célula del sistema nervioso. En los axones mielinizados, el potencial de acción se regenera en cada nódulo de Ranvier,espacios repetidos en la mielina, hasta que alcanza la terminal al final del axón, o terminal presináptica. La terminal presináptica tiene vesículas que contienen grupos de neurotransmisores. Los potenciales de acción hacen que las vesículas experimenten exocitosis fusionándose con la membrana celular y liberando neurotransmisores en la hendidura sináptica, la brecha entre las células en una sinapsis. Diferentes neurotransmisores pueden tener distintos efectos sobre la célula postsináptica. Una sinapsis excitadora aumenta las posibilidades de iniciar un potencial de acción en la célula postsináptica, aunque una sinapsis inhibidora disminuye las posibilidades de que se produzca un potencial de acción. <h4>Morfología neuronal</h4> La forma general de las neuronas,su morfología, puede variar drásticamente y, a menudo, se relaciona con su función. Algunas neuronas tienen pocos procesos dendríticos y un solo axón, otras tienen ejes dendríticos muy intrincados, aunque otras tienen axones que pueden abarcar todo el organismo. Las diversas morfologías se suelen utilizar para definir el tipo de neurona. La cantidad de entradas,conexiones sinápticas, puede influir en la forma en que una célula responde a las señales. Por tanto, la morfología de las dendritas y el número de sinapsis que contienen es una característica importante que puede determinar el tipo de neurona. En el sistema nervioso periférico, las dendritas también pueden definir el campo receptivo de una célula,el espacio físico del cuerpo al que son sensibles. <h4>El arte de visualizar estructuras neuronales</h4> El anatomista español Santiago Ramón y Cajal, que trabajó a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, fue pionero en el rastreo de neuronas individuales y proporcionó conocimientos fundamentales sobre su naturaleza misma. Produjo impresionantes representaciones de células que aún ofrecen una cantidad considerable de detalles. Utilizando la técnica de tinción desarrollada y denominada así en honor al biólogo italiano Camillo Golgi, pudo rastrear la estructura de muchos tipos diferentes de células en el cerebro. Neurons send signals through a clear set of structures that let them receive, process, and pass on information. They are the main cells of the nervous system and use electrochemical signals to communicate. Neurons also talk to other cells through neurotransmitters at junctions called synapses.

Most neurons share three main parts: a cell body, also called the soma, dendrites, and an axon. The soma holds the nucleus and other organelles needed for cell function. Dendrites usually receive signals, while the axon carries signals onward to other neurons or to muscle cells.

Neurons receive input mainly at postsynaptic terminals, which are often found on small bumps called spines on dendrites. These spines contain receptors for neurotransmitters and other chemical signals. Because dendrites can branch a great deal, some neurons can collect tens of thousands of inputs. Neurons can also have synapses on other parts of the cell, such as the cell body.

Signals that arrive at synapses move down the dendrite to the soma. The cell then processes the message and decides whether to pass it on. If it does, the main electrical signal, called an action potential, starts at the axon hillock, the junction between the soma and the axon.

Axons can vary in length and may be very long. Some extend from the spinal cord all the way to the foot. Longer axons are often wrapped in a fatty myelin sheath, which insulates the axon and helps keep the electrical signal going. Glia, another type of nervous system cell, make the myelin sheath.

In myelinated axons, the action potential is regenerated at each node of Ranvier, which is one of the repeated gaps in the myelin. The signal continues this way until it reaches the presynaptic terminal at the end of the axon. That terminal contains vesicles filled with neurotransmitters.

When an action potential arrives, the vesicles fuse with the cell membrane and release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the gap between cells at a synapse. Different neurotransmitters can affect the postsynaptic cell in different ways. An excitatory synapse makes an action potential more likely, while an inhibitory synapse makes it less likely.

Neuron shape, or morphology, can vary a lot and often matches function. Some neurons have few dendritic processes and one axon, while others have highly branched dendritic trees or axons that span the length of the organism. Scientists often use these shapes to help define neuron types.

The number of synaptic connections also affects how a cell responds to signals. For neurons in the peripheral nervous system, dendrites can help define the receptive field, which is the physical area of the body that the cell senses. The form of the dendrites and the number of synapses they contain are important clues about neuron function.

The study of neuron shape was advanced by Santiago Ramon y Cajal in the late 19th and early 20th century. He traced individual neurons and made detailed drawings that still show a great deal of information. Using the staining method developed by Camillo Golgi, he was able to map many cell types in the brain and sketch basic neuronal circuits, which are networks of neurons that work together to process specific information.
