Cuando un haluro de alquilo reacciona con un nucleófilo, el nucleófilo puede desplazar al halógeno para dar el producto de sustitución o puede abstraer un hidrógeno vecino para formar un alqueno a través de una reacción de eliminación.
En las reacciones de eliminación, los nucleófilos funcionan como bases de Lewis al donar un par de electrones a un protón. Algunas de las bases comunes utilizadas para promover las reacciones de eliminación incluyen hidróxidos como el hidróxido de sodio, alcóxidos como el terc-butóxido de potasio o alcoholes como el etanol.
Las reacciones de eliminación suelen implicar la pérdida de pequeños fragmentos moleculares de un sustrato para formar al menos un enlace π. En los haluros de alquilo, la reacción de eliminación procede con la pérdida de un átomo de hidrógeno y un átomo de halógeno, de ahí el nombre de deshidrohalogenación.
Dado que el carbono unido al grupo saliente es un carbono α y el hidrógeno en el carbono adyacente es un hidrógeno β, estas reacciones a menudo se denominan reacciones de β eliminación o 1,2 eliminación.
La mayoría de las reacciones de eliminación ocurren a través de un mecanismo E2 o E1.

Elimination Reactions

Un nucleófilo puede reaccionar con un haluro de alquilo para dar el producto de sustitución desplazando el halógeno. O puede funcionar como base para dar el producto de eliminación por desprotonación del carbono vecino para formar un alqueno. En una reacción de eliminación, el sustrato pierde dos grupos de carbonos adyacentes que forman al menos un enlace π. El carbono unido al halógeno se llama carbono α, mientras que el carbono adyacente se llama carbono β; por lo tanto, estas reacciones se denominan reacciones de eliminación β o reacciones de eliminación 1,2.


 El nucleófilo actúa como base de Lewis donando un par de electrones a un protón. Las bases comunes utilizadas para promover reacciones de eliminación incluyen hidróxidos (OH−), alcóxidos (OR−) y amidas (NH2−). En presencia de una base fuerte, el haluro de alquilo pierde un protón del carbono β y el halógeno del carbono α, lo que permite la formación de un enlace π entre los dos átomos de carbono.


 Mecanismo de reacciones de eliminación.


 Las reacciones de eliminación comúnmente ocurren a través de los mecanismos E2 o E1. El mecanismo E2 tiene lugar en un único paso concertado: la abstracción del hidrógeno β por la base va acompañada de la ruptura del enlace carbono-halógeno. Por tanto, la reacción E2 transcurre a través de un estado de transición.


 La reacción E1 ocurre en dos pasos. Primero, el haluro de alquilo se ioniza formando un intermedio carbocatión y un ion haluro. A continuación, la desprotonación del carbocatión por la base da como resultado un enlace π. Por tanto, en las reacciones E1, el intermedio carbocatión se forma mediante un estado de transición y existe un segundo estado de transición para el paso de desprotonación.


 Regio y estereoselectividad


 Cuando el haluro de alquilo tiene dos carbonos β diferentes, la reacción de eliminación puede producir más de un alqueno. En tales casos, generalmente se observa el alqueno más sustituido (y más estable), conocido como producto de Zaitsev. Sin embargo, en algunos casos se obtiene el alqueno menos sustituido (producto de Hofmann). La elección de la base juega un papel importante a la hora de decidir qué producto regioselectivo se forma. Las reacciones de eliminación también favorecen la formación de transalquenos sobre los isómeros cis, haciéndolos estereoselectivos.

Elimination reactions of alkyl halides form alkenes by removing groups from adjacent carbons. A base can act on the substrate instead of causing substitution. It deprotonates the neighboring carbon, and the reaction creates at least one pi bond. The carbon bonded to the halogen is the alpha carbon, and the adjacent carbon is the beta carbon. These are also called beta elimination or 1,2-elimination reactions.

Strong bases help drive this process. Common examples include hydroxides, alkoxides, and amides. The base donates an electron pair to a proton, so it behaves as a Lewis base. In the presence of a strong base, the alkyl halide loses a proton from the beta carbon and the halogen from the alpha carbon. This lets a pi bond form between the two carbon atoms.

Elimination reactions often follow either the E2 or E1 mechanism. The E2 pathway is a single concerted step. The base removes the beta hydrogen at the same time that the alpha carbon-halogen bond breaks. This means E2 has one transition state.

The E1 pathway happens in two steps. First, the alkyl halide ionizes to form a carbocation intermediate and a halide ion. Then the base removes a proton from the carbocation, which forms the pi bond. In E1 reactions, the first step has one transition state, and the deprotonation step has a second transition state.

When an alkyl halide has two different beta carbons, more than one alkene can form. The more substituted and usually more stable alkene is called the Zaitsev product. In some cases, the less substituted Hofmann product forms instead, and the base helps decide which product is favored. Elimination reactions also tend to give trans-alkenes over cis isomers, so they are stereoselective.
