Recordemos que el 1,3-butadieno es un sistema conjugado de cuatro carbonos. En comparación, el catión alilo y el anión son sistemas conjugados de tres carbonos.
Una combinación lineal de los tres orbitales p atómicos no hibridados en sistemas alílicos da tres orbitales moleculares π.
El orbital molecular de menor energía, ψ1, está formado por una superposición en fase de todos los orbitales p y es completamente enlazante.

The allyl cation and allyl anion both have the same three-carbon orbital pattern. An allyl group is a conjugated system, which means its electrons are spread across connected p orbitals. In the allyl anion, propene is treated with a strong base that removes a methyl hydrogen. In the allyl cation, the species forms as an intermediate in substitution reactions that involve allylic halides.

In both cases, the allylic carbon changes from sp3 to sp2 hybridization. That change leaves three sp2-hybridized carbons in a row, each with one unhybridized p orbital. These three atomic p orbitals combine to form three molecular orbitals: phi 1, phi 2, and phi 3.

Phi 1 is the bonding molecular orbital. Phi 2 is nonbonding and has a node through the central carbon. Phi 3 is antibonding and has two nodes. The allyl cation and allyl anion share this same molecular orbital framework. They differ only in the number of pi electrons. The allyl cation has two pi electrons in phi 1. The allyl anion has four pi electrons, which fill phi 1 and phi 2.
