Los hidrocarburos insaturados monocíclicos neutros con un número impar de átomos de carbono carecen de aromaticidad debido a la presencia de un carbono sp3 intermedio en el anillo.
Por ejemplo, el ciclopentadieno no es aromático, ya que tiene solo 4 electrones π y un carbono sp3 que interrumpe la superposición continua de los orbitales p.
En particular, la eliminación de un hidrógeno del grupo CH2 con ambos, uno o ninguno de los electrones de enlace convierte el carbono sp3 en sp2, generando un catión, un radical y un anión, respectivamente.
En comparación con el catión y el radical, solo el anión tiene el número requerido de (4n + 2) π electrones.
Además, la disponibilidad de un orbital 2p en el carbono sp2 facilita una superposición continua de orbitales p y la deslocalización de la carga negativa en todo el anillo, lo que hace que el anión ciclopentadienilo sea aromático.
Además, los electrones π que ocupan los orbitales moleculares de enlace y las cinco estructuras de resonancia corroboran aún más la inusual estabilidad del anión aromático.

Aromatic Hydrocarbon Anions: Structural Overview

Los hidrocarburos neutros como el ciclopentadieno con un número impar de átomos de carbono y un grupo CH_2 intermedio en el anillo no son aromáticos. El ciclopentadieno con 4 electrones π no satisface la regla de los 4n + 2 electrones π. Además, el grupo CH_2 intermedio tiene hibridación sp^3 y carece de un orbital p vacante, interrumpiendo así la superposición de los orbitales p de manera continua y evitando la deslocalización de los electrones π en todo el anillo.


 Debido a la ausencia de superposición continua de orbitales p, el ciclopentadieno no cumple con los criterios de aromaticidad. Sin embargo, la eliminación de un hidrógeno con ambos, uno o ningún electrón del grupo CH_2 impulsa la conversión del carbono sp^3 en sp^2, convirtiendo así el ciclopentadieno en catión, radical y anión ciclopentadienilo, respectivamente, que tienen un orbital p vacante. Entre las tres especies, el catión ciclopentadienilo y el radical con cuatro y cinco electrones π, respectivamente, no cumplen con el criterio de 4n + 2 electrones π y no son aromáticos. Por otro lado, el anión ciclopentadienilo con 6 electrones π, un anillo superpuesto continuo de orbitales p y una densidad de electrones π deslocalizada se vuelve aromático. Además, las cinco estructuras de resonancia del anión ciclopentadienilo y la ocupación de los orbitales moleculares de enlace por los 6 electrones π en el diagrama de escarcha validan la estabilidad inusual del anión.

Cyclopentadiene is a neutral hydrocarbon that is not aromatic. It contains an odd number of carbon atoms and one CH2 group in the ring. With only 4 pi electrons, it does not follow the 4n + 2 pi electron rule. The CH2 carbon is sp3 hybridized, so it has no vacant p orbital to keep p orbitals overlapped around the ring.

That break in overlap stops pi electrons from spreading across the entire ring. As a result, cyclopentadiene does not meet the usual aromaticity criteria. If one hydrogen is removed from the CH2 group, the carbon changes from sp3 to sp2 hybridization. This creates a vacant p orbital and gives three related species: the cyclopentadienyl cation, radical, and anion.

These three species do not behave the same way. The cyclopentadienyl cation has 4 pi electrons, and the radical has 5 pi electrons. Neither one satisfies the 4n + 2 rule, so neither is aromatic. The cyclopentadienyl anion has 6 pi electrons, a continuous ring of overlapping p orbitals, and delocalized pi electron density. That makes it aromatic and unusually stable.

The electrostatic potential map of the anion supports this electron delocalization across the ring. Its five resonance structures also show how the electrons can be spread out. The frost diagram gives the same result, since all 6 pi electrons fill bonding molecular orbitals. Together, these features explain why the cyclopentadienyl anion is more stable than the neutral ring, the cation, or the radical.
