Work

Se dice que el trabajo se realiza cuando la energía se transfiere de una entidad a otra mediante la aplicación de la fuerza. Por ejemplo, cuando se aplica una fuerza F sobre una caja y se mueve a través de un desplazamiento ds, se trabaja contra la fuerza de fricción.
El incremento en el trabajo realizado durante el proceso es igual al producto escalar de los vectores de fuerza y desplazamiento.
Solo el componente de fuerza aplicado en paralelo al desplazamiento del objeto contribuye al trabajo realizado.
Cuando un objeto se mueve de la posición A a la B, el trabajo total realizado por la fuerza es la integral de la fuerza con respecto al desplazamiento a lo largo de la trayectoria del desplazamiento.
Para una fuerza que es constante tanto en magnitud como en dirección, la integral depende solo de los puntos extremos y, por lo tanto, el trabajo realizado es independiente del camino tomado.
Cuando una fuerza variable actúa sobre un objeto, como la expansión o compresión de un resorte, la fuerza del resorte se expresa en función de la distancia. El trabajo realizado por la fuerza del resorte a lo largo del desplazamiento desde la posición inicial hasta la posición final viene dado por esta ecuación, donde k es la constante del resorte.

Las fuerzas pueden variar en función de la posición y los desplazamientos pueden ser a lo largo de diferentes trayectorias entre dos puntos. El incremento del trabajo (dW) realizado por una fuerza que actúa a través de un desplazamiento infinitesimal se puede definir como el producto escalar de las fuerzas (<img alt="Image1" src="/files/ftp_upload/12663/12663img01.png">) y los desplazamientos (<img alt="Image1" src="/files/ftp_upload/12663/12663img02.png">) vectores. El producto escalar se puede expresar en términos de las magnitudes de los vectores y el coseno del ángulo entre ellos, ya que es más fácil definir el producto escalar en palabras como una expresión de magnitudes y ángulos. También se puede expresar en términos de diferentes componentes, como se introdujo en la lección de vectores. Work in physics connects force, motion, and energy transfer. Work is done when a force acts on an object and that object moves from one position to another. If there is no displacement, no work is done, even if a force is present.

The amount of work depends on the force and the direction of motion. For a very small displacement, the work done is written as the dot product of force and displacement vectors. That means work depends on the size of the vectors and the angle between them. You can also describe it using vector components, and it gives the same result whether you use the force component along the displacement or the displacement component along the force.

Work is measured in units of force times distance. In the SI system, that unit is the newton-meter, or N·m. In the English system, it is the foot-pound, or ft·lb.

The easiest case is a force that stays constant in both size and direction. In more general situations, the force can change from place to place, and the path between two points can be curved. Then the work is found by adding the tiny work done over each small part of the path. The force components and the path equation both matter in those cases, but the main idea stays the same: break the motion into small steps and add the work from each one.
