Conservation of Energy

La ley de conservación de la energía establece que la energía total de un sistema aislado siempre se conserva. Significa que la energía solo puede ser convertida de una forma a otra.
Por ejemplo, la energía potencial almacenada del agua en la cima de un acantilado se convierte en energía cinética cuando cae.
De manera similar, cuando se quema un tronco de madera, la energía potencial almacenada en la madera se convierte en energía cinética en forma de luz y calor.
Matemáticamente, la ley de conservación de la energía se representa como la suma del cambio en la energía cinética, la energía potencial y la energía interna igual a cero. En otras palabras, si una forma de energía disminuye, se compensa con un aumento en otras formas de energía.

Los términos 'magnitud conservada' y 'ley de conservación' tienen significados científicos específicos en física, que difieren de los significados asociados con su uso cotidiano. Por ejemplo, en el uso cotidiano, el agua podría conservarse al no usarla, al usar menos o al reutilizarla. Sin embargo, en términos científicos, una magnitud conservada de un sistema se mantiene constante, cambia en una magnitud definida que se transfiere a otros sistemas y se convierte en otras formas de esa magnitud. En el sentido científico, una magnitud conservada puede transformarse pero no crearse ni destruirse estrictamente. Por lo tanto, no existe una ley física de conservación del agua. En la conservación de la energía, la energía mecánica de una partícula se mantiene constante a menos que las fuerzas externas al sistema o las fuerzas no conservativas trabajen sobre ella. En este caso, el cambio en la energía mecánica es igual al trabajo realizado por las fuerzas no conservativas. Esta afirmación expresa el concepto de conservación de energía para una partícula clásica siempre y cuando solo haya trabajo conservativo. Energy changes in a closed system follow a conservation law in physics. A conserved quantity is not the same as the everyday use of the word &quot;conserved.&quot; In science, a conserved quantity stays constant, or it changes by a definite amount that is transferred to another system and converted into another form of the same quantity.

This means a conserved quantity can change form, but it cannot be created or destroyed in a strict physical sense. For that reason, physics does not have a law of conservation of water, even though people may say water is conserved in daily life. In the scientific sense, the system keeps track of the quantity as it moves or changes form.

For a classical particle, mechanical energy stays constant unless something outside the system does work or non-conservative forces act on it. A classical particle is a point mass that is non-relativistic and obeys Newton's laws of motion. When non-conservative forces do work, the change in mechanical energy equals that work. If only conservative work is present, the energy-conservation statement holds for the particle.
