Cuando un tronco de madera que flota en la superficie del agua es empujado hacia abajo y se le permite balancearse hacia arriba y hacia abajo, oscila alrededor de su posición media con una amplitud constante similar al movimiento armónico simple.
Con el tiempo, una fuerza disipadora conocida como fuerza de amortiguación ejercida por el agua reduce la amplitud de la oscilación con cierta pérdida de energía, correspondiente a su movimiento, y da lugar a oscilaciones armónicas amortiguadas.
La fuerza de amortiguación es proporcional a la velocidad del tronco de madera, que es la medida de la oscilación decaída dirigida en sentido opuesto al movimiento.
La fuerza neta es igual a las fuerzas de restauración y amortiguación, que actúan en direcciones opuestas.
Reorganizar y reescribir la ecuación de velocidad y aceleración en términos de derivadas de posición con respecto al tiempo conduce a una ecuación cuadrática diferencial, que describe el movimiento armónico amortiguado del tronco de madera.

Damped Oscillations

En el mundo real, las oscilaciones rara vez siguen un verdadero movimiento armónico simple. Un sistema que continúa su movimiento indefinidamente sin perder su amplitud se denomina sin amortiguamiento. Sin embargo, la fricción de algún tipo generalmente amortigua el movimiento, por lo que desaparece o necesita más fuerza para continuar. Por ejemplo, una cuerda de guitarra deja de oscilar unos segundos después de ser pulsada. De manera similar, uno debe empujar continuamente un columpio para mantener a un niño balanceándose en un patio de recreo. 

 Aunque la fricción y otras fuerzas no conservativas pueden hacerse insignificantes, el movimiento sin amortiguamiento completo es raro. De hecho, a menudo se requieren estas fuerzas no conservativas para amortiguar las oscilaciones, como en los amortiguadores del automóvil. Para un sistema que tiene una pequeña magnitud de amortiguamiento, el período y la frecuencia son casi los mismos que para el movimiento armónico simple, pero la amplitud disminuye gradualmente. Esto ocurre porque la fuerza amortiguadora no conservativa elimina energía del sistema, generalmente en forma de energía térmica. Oscillations in the real world often lose energy as they move. A system that keeps the same amplitude without any loss is called undamped. That kind of motion is rare, because friction and other non-conservative forces usually reduce the motion over time.

Common examples show this clearly. A guitar string stops vibrating a few seconds after it is plucked. A swing also needs a person to keep pushing it if the motion is to continue. In some devices, such as car shock absorbers, damping is useful because it helps control the motion.

When damping is small, the motion still looks much like simple harmonic motion. The period and frequency stay nearly the same, but the amplitude gets smaller and smaller. The damping force removes energy from the system, and that energy usually becomes thermal energy. Because mechanical energy is taken away, the work done by the non-conservative force, W nc, is negative.
