Los núcleos activos de RMN tienen niveles de energía asociados con sus orientaciones de momento magnético nuclear llamados "estados de espín".
En ausencia de un campo magnético, los momentos magnéticos nucleares están orientados aleatoriamente y los estados de espín son degenerados.
Cuando se aplica un campo magnético externo, solo hay 2orientaciones I + 1 disponibles.
Las orientaciones alineadas contra el campo son de mayor energía que las orientaciones alineadas con el campo, por lo que los estados de espín se cuantizan en un fenómeno llamado división de Zeeman.

NMR-active nuclei have spin states that describe the orientation of their nuclear magnetic moments. Without a magnetic field, these moments point in random directions, and the spin states are degenerate, meaning they have the same energy.

When an external magnetic field is applied, the nucleus can only take on 2I + 1 orientations, where I is the nuclear spin. A proton with spin 1/2 has two possible orientations. A quadrupolar nucleus with spin 1 has three possible orientations.

The orientation aligned against the field has higher energy than the one aligned with the field. This splitting of the spin states is called Zeeman splitting. The energy gap between the two spin states increases as the applied magnetic field gets stronger.

At temperatures close to absolute zero, the lower-energy spin state is more populated than the higher-energy state. This difference in population helps explain how nuclear spin states respond to both magnetic field strength and temperature.
