No todas las reacciones de cicloadición tienen lugar en condiciones térmicas.

Some cycloaddition reactions need light instead of heat. A [2 + 2] cycloaddition between two ethylene molecules is one example. It is allowed under photochemical conditions but forbidden under thermal conditions.

A thermal [2 + 2] cycloaddition is symmetry forbidden. The ground-state HOMO of one ethylene molecule and the LUMO of the other are out of phase. That mismatch prevents a concerted suprafacial-suprafacial overlap.

UV light changes the electron arrangement in one ethylene molecule. Absorption of UV light promotes an electron from the ground-state HOMO to the LUMO. The excited-state HOMO then has the symmetry needed to interact with the LUMO of the other ethylene. This allows the reaction to proceed by a concerted, symmetry-allowed pathway.
