What is an Experiment?

Un experimento es un enfoque sistemático para probar o refutar una hipótesis y descubrir nuevos conocimientos. La estadística se utiliza a menudo para interpretar los resultados de un experimento.
Considere un experimento para determinar la relación entre el uso del teléfono móvil y la calidad del sueño entre los estudiantes universitarios.
Estos estudiantes, denominados sujetos, se dividen en dos grupos. Uno es experimental, mientras que el otro es un grupo de control. Solo el grupo experimental puede usar teléfonos móviles treinta minutos antes de acostarse, mientras que el grupo de control actúa como estándar de comparación.
A continuación, los investigadores registran el número de horas de sueño y la latencia o variables del sueño, es decir, las características de los sujetos que se examinan, miden e interpretan.
Las variables son de dos tipos: dependientes e independientes.

Un experimento es una actividad planificada que se lleva a cabo en condiciones controladas. El propósito de un experimento es investigar la relación entre dos variables. Cuando una variable provoca un cambio en otra, llamamos a la primera variable variable explicativa o independiente. La variable afectada se llama variable dependiente o de respuesta. En un experimento aleatorio, el investigador manipula valores de la variable explicativa y mide los cambios resultantes en la variable de respuesta. Los diferentes valores de la variable explicativa se denominan tratamientos. Una unidad experimental es un único objeto o individuo que se va a medir.

Quieres investigar la eficacia de la vitamina E para prevenir enfermedades. Reclutas a un grupo de sujetos y les preguntas si toman regularmente vitamina E. Observas que los sujetos que toman vitamina E exhiben, en promedio, mejor salud que aquellos que no la toman. ¿Esto prueba que la vitamina E es eficaz en la prevención de enfermedades? No lo hace. Hay muchas diferencias entre los dos grupos en comparación además del consumo de vitamina E. Las personas que toman vitamina E con regularidad suelen tomar otras medidas para mejorar su salud: ejercicio, dieta, otros suplementos vitamínicos y optar por no fumar. Cualquiera de estos factores podría estar influyendo en la salud. Como se describe, este estudio no prueba que la vitamina E sea la clave para la prevención de enfermedades.

Las variables adicionales que pueden nublar un estudio se denominan variables al acecho. Para demostrar que la variable explicativa está provocando un cambio en la variable de respuesta, es necesario aislar la variable explicativa. El investigador debe diseñar su experimento de tal manera que solo haya una diferencia entre los grupos que se comparan: los tratamientos planificados. Esto se logra mediante la asignación aleatoria de unidades experimentales a grupos de tratamiento. Cuando a los sujetos se les asignan tratamientos al azar, todas las posibles variables ocultas se distribuyen por igual entre los grupos. En este punto la única diferencia entre grupos es la impuesta por el investigador. Random assignment in experiments helps researchers test cause and effect between two variables. An experiment is a planned activity carried out under controlled conditions. It is used to study how one variable affects another. The variable that causes change is the explanatory or independent variable. The variable that changes in response is the response or dependent variable.

In a randomized experiment, the researcher changes the explanatory variable and measures the response variable. The different values of the explanatory variable are called treatments. An experimental unit is the single object or individual that is measured. This structure lets the researcher compare treatment groups under the same planned conditions.

A simple health example shows why random assignment matters. Suppose a researcher wants to test whether vitamin E helps prevent disease. If people are only asked whether they already take vitamin E, the group that takes vitamin E may look healthier on average. But that result does not prove vitamin E is the reason.

Other differences can affect the outcome. People who take vitamin E regularly may also exercise more, eat better, take other vitamin supplements, or choose not to smoke. These extra influences are called lurking variables. They can cloud a study and make it hard to tell which factor is really causing the change.

To isolate the explanatory variable, the researcher must design the experiment so that the treatment is the only planned difference between the groups. This is done by random assignment of experimental units to treatment groups. Random assignment spreads potential lurking variables more equally among the groups. Then differences in the response variable can be linked to the treatments themselves.
