Study Design in Statistics

Los diseños de estudio son el marco para recopilar y analizar datos en un estudio en particular. Pueden ser descriptivos o analíticos.
Un estudio descriptivo describe una o más características de un grupo, por ejemplo, la altura de un naranjo o cuáles son los rasgos de personalidad de un industrial exitoso. Se refiere a la cuestión del qué y del por qué no.
Un estudio analítico establece relaciones causales entre las variables y pone a prueba una hipótesis.
Los estudios analíticos pueden dividirse a su vez en estudios observacionales y experimentales.
Los estudios observacionales describen cómo la exposición y el resultado ocurren naturalmente y miden las variables de interés sin influir en la respuesta. Por ejemplo, comparar el rendimiento de las naranjas de dos fincas con diferentes características del suelo. Este tipo de estudio no manipularía el suelo ni sus propiedades.
Por el contrario, el estudio experimental manipula activamente las variables independientes y mide el resultado o la variable dependiente. Por lo tanto, los investigadores vuelven a las granjas y ven si los fertilizantes adecuados pueden aportar mejoras estadísticamente significativas en el rendimiento de las naranjas.

Un diseño de estudio es un conjunto de técnicas que permiten a un investigador recopilar y analizar datos de diferentes variables definidas para un problema de investigación específico. La estadística suele utilizarse para un diseño de estudio eficaz y experimentos más sólidos.

¿La aspirina reduce el riesgo de sufrir ataques cardíacos? ¿Es una marca de fertilizante más eficaz que otra para cultivar rosas? ¿Es la fatiga tan peligrosa para un conductor como la influencia del alcohol? Preguntas como éstas se responden mediante experimentos aleatorios con un diseño de estudio adecuado que garantice la producción de datos confiables y precisos.

Hay dos tipos principales de diseños de estudio: estudios descriptivos y analíticos. En los estudios descriptivos, se describen las variables; y la pregunta de qué, en lugar de por qué es respondida. Los estudios analíticos se dividen además en estudios observacionales y experimentales. En los estudios observacionales, las variables dependientes e independientes se analizan sin alterar nunca ninguna variable. Por ejemplo, los naranjos crecen cuando están expuestos a la luz solar. Accidentes de tráfico y velocidad de los vehículos. Los estudios experimentales influyen o alteran la variable independiente y miden el resultado. El propósito de un experimento es investigar la relación entre dos variables. En un experimento aleatorio, el investigador manipula valores de la variable explicativa y mide los cambios resultantes en la variable de respuesta. Los diferentes valores de la variable explicativa se denominan tratamientos. Una unidad experimental es un único objeto o individuo que se va a medir.

Study design in statistics helps researchers collect and analyze data from variables in a specific research problem. It supports stronger experiments and more reliable data. Questions about aspirin and heart attacks, fertilizer and rose growth, or fatigue and alcohol-related driving risk all depend on careful study design.

Study designs are usually grouped into two main types: descriptive and analytical studies. Descriptive studies describe the variables and answer what is happening, rather than why it is happening. Analytical studies go further and are divided into observational and experimental studies.

In observational studies, researchers analyze the dependent variable and the independent variable without changing either one. This type of study looks at natural relationships. Examples include orange trees growing when they are exposed to sunlight and the link between road accidents and vehicle speed.

Experimental studies are different because they change, or influence, the independent variable and then measure the result. The goal of an experiment is to study the relationship between two variables. In a randomized experiment, the researcher changes the values of the explanatory variable and measures the response variable.

The different values of the explanatory variable are called treatments. The experimental unit is the single object or individual being measured. These ideas are central to randomized experiments and help produce reliable, accurate data.
