Power and Energy

La energía es el trabajo total requerido para impulsar la corriente a través del circuito.

La potencia y la energía entregada a un elemento son temas de gran importancia en el campo de la ingeniería eléctrica. Es un hecho bien conocido que una bombilla de 100 vatios emite más luz que una de 60 vatios. Por tanto, los cálculos de potencia y energía juegan un papel crucial en el análisis de circuitos eléctricos. La potencia, definida como la tasa de tiempo en que se gasta o absorbe energía, se cuantifica en unidades llamadas vatios (W). La relación entre potencia y energía se da matemáticamente como <img alt="Equation1" src="/files/ftp_upload/15065/15065_PT_Equation_1.svg" style="text-align: center; height: 36px;"> donde "p" representa la potencia en vatios (W), "w" indica la energía en julios (J) y "t" significa el tiempo en segundos (s). La potencia asociada con la corriente que pasa a través de un elemento dentro de un circuito es el producto del voltaje a través de ese elemento y la corriente que fluye a través de él. Cuando la corriente ingresa al elemento del circuito por el terminal positivo del voltaje y sale por el terminal negativo, se adhiere a la convención pasiva. En esta convención, el voltaje impulsa una carga positiva en la misma dirección indicada por la corriente. En consecuencia, la potencia calculada multiplicando el voltaje del elemento por la corriente del elemento representa la potencia recibida por el elemento. En ocasiones, este poder se denomina "el poder absorbido por el elemento" o "el poder disipado por el elemento". Es importante destacar que la potencia recibida por un elemento puede asumir valores positivos o negativos, dependiendo de los valores reales del voltaje y la corriente del elemento. Por otro lado, cuando no se cumple la convención pasiva, la corriente ingresa al elemento del circuito por el terminal negativo del voltaje y sale por el terminal positivo. En este caso, el voltaje impulsa una carga positiva en la dirección opuesta a la indicada por la corriente. Por lo tanto, cuando el voltaje y la corriente del elemento no cumplen con la convención pasiva, la potencia calculada multiplicando estos valores representa la potencia suministrada por el elemento. De manera similar a la energía recibida, la energía suministrada también puede ser positiva o negativa, dependiendo de los valores específicos del voltaje y la corriente del elemento. Circuit power, absorption, and supply explain how much energy an element uses or delivers in an electric circuit. These ideas matter in electrical engineering because power and energy calculations help describe circuit behavior. A 100-watt light bulb, for example, emits more light than a 60-watt bulb, so wattage is a useful measure in real devices.

Power is the time rate of expending or absorbing energy. It is measured in watts, written as W. The relation between power and energy uses the variables p for power in watts, w for energy in joules, and t for time in seconds.

For a circuit element, power is found by multiplying the voltage across the element by the current through it. When current enters the positive terminal of the voltage and leaves the negative terminal, the passive convention is used. In this case, the voltage pushes positive charge in the same direction as the current.

Under the passive convention, the product of voltage and current gives the power received by the element. This is also called absorbed power or dissipated power. The received power can be positive or negative, depending on the actual voltage and current values.

If the current enters at the negative terminal and leaves at the positive terminal, the passive convention is not followed. Then the voltage drives positive charge opposite to the current direction. In that case, the product of voltage and current represents the power supplied by the element, and this supplied power can also be positive or negative.

The power received by an element and the power supplied by the same element are related. When voltage and current follow the passive convention, the energy received by the element is given by the power-energy relation over time. Energy is the capacity to perform work, and it is measured in joules, or J.
