Al considerar una viga bajo carga continua, el esfuerzo cortante en cualquier punto se representa mediante funciones matemáticas.
Sin embargo, cuando la viga experimenta una carga discontinua, se requieren diferentes funciones para representar con precisión la fuerza cortante en varias partes de la viga.
En tales casos, las funciones de singularidad permiten la representación de la fuerza cortante con una sola expresión matemática a pesar de las condiciones de carga variables.
Para derivar las funciones de singularidad, se dibuja un diagrama de cuerpo libre de la viga y se corta conceptualmente en puntos específicos. A continuación, se determina la función de singularidad que representa el esfuerzo cortante en cada porción de la viga.
Aplicando la convención de que los corchetes angulares o los corchetes de Macaulay se reemplazan con paréntesis cuando x es mayor o igual que l, y con cero cuando x es menor que l, estas funciones de singularidad se pueden diferenciar o integrar como expresiones matemáticas ordinarias.
