El elemento pequeño de una viga prismática sobre el que actúan las fuerzas de corte verticales y horizontales, junto con las fuerzas normales, se considera para analizar el cortante en una cara horizontal.
Utilizando la ecuación de equilibrio, se examina el equilibrio de fuerzas que actúan sobre este elemento para determinar el esfuerzo cortante horizontal. Esta fuerza se equipara a los momentos de flexión y al primer momento de la sección transversal.
El análisis del elemento inferior o del elemento superior arroja el mismo resultado, ya que las fuerzas de cizallamiento ejercidas entre sí son iguales en magnitud pero opuestas en dirección.
También se observa que el primer momento de la porción por debajo de una cierta línea en el haz es igual en magnitud pero opuesto en signo al primer momento de la porción de arriba.
El primer momento alcanza su máximo cuando la distancia desde el eje neutro es igual a cero, ya que los elementos por encima del eje neutro contribuyen positivamente a la parte de integración de la ecuación de esfuerzos cortantes horizontales, mientras que los que están por debajo contribuyen negativamente.
Cuando el corte horizontal se divide por la longitud del elemento, se obtiene el flujo de corte.

 El diseño comienza analizando la viga como un cuerpo libre para identificar momentos y equilibrios de fuerzas, determinando así las reacciones en los apoyos. A continuación, el diseñador crea diagramas de fuerza cortante y momento flector que resaltan que el momento flector máximo para una carga uniformemente distribuida generalmente ocurre en el punto medio de la viga.
 
 La clave para el diseño es calcular el momento flector máximo a partir del diagrama de corte y luego determinar el módulo de sección mínimo necesario, dividiendo este momento por la tensión permitida. Beam shear flow comes from the horizontal shear that acts on a prismatic beam element. The element is also acted on by vertical shear forces and normal forces. To study this behavior, the beam is divided into upper and lower sections by the neutral axis.

The force balance on the small element is written with an equilibrium equation. That step reveals the horizontal shearing force. This force is tied to the bending moments and to the cross-section’s first moment of inertia.

The same result is obtained whether the upper section or the lower section is used. The shear forces are equal in magnitude but point in opposite directions. The first moment of the area below a chosen line matches the first moment of the area above it in magnitude and direction.

This first moment is largest at the neutral axis. Sections above the neutral axis add positively to the horizontal shear calculation. Sections below the neutral axis add negatively.

Shear flow is found by dividing the horizontal shear by the length of the beam element. This makes it easier to describe how shear acts on a horizontal plane inside the beam. Understanding this relationship helps with structural integrity checks and beam design in engineering projects.
