El teorema de Castigliano es útil para determinar desplazamientos y rotaciones en estructuras sometidas a deformaciones elásticas.
Establece que la derivada parcial de la energía elástica de deformación con respecto a una carga dada es equivalente al desplazamiento en el punto de aplicación de la carga particular.
Del mismo modo, supongamos que la estructura está sometida a parejas. En este caso, el ángulo de rotación de la estructura en el punto de aplicación de un par se calcula diferenciando parcialmente la energía de deformación con respecto al par aplicado.
Para estructuras sometidas a torsión debido a pares aplicados lentamente, el ángulo de torsión para una sección del eje se puede calcular tomando la derivada parcial de la energía de deformación con respecto al par aplicado.
Si una viga con secciones transversales no uniformes sufre deformación debido a la carga, la energía de deformación se expresa en términos de una integral. Aquí, la deflexión en el punto de aplicación de la carga se calcula diferenciando la energía de deformación con respecto a la carga antes de la integración.

Castigliano's theorem uses strain energy to find deflection and rotation in elastic structures. Strain energy is the work done by external loads during elastic deformation. The theorem links that energy to the movement caused by the load.

The key idea is simple. The partial derivative of the total strain energy with respect to a specific force gives the displacement at the point where that force acts. The same method also works for a moment, where the derivative gives the rotation at the point of loading.

This approach is useful for beams with non-uniform cross-sections and for structures with complex loading. In these cases, the deflection at any point can be found by differentiating the strain energy with respect to the load. The method is also used for shafts in torsion, where applied torque causes elastic twisting.
