Una señal x(t) es un conjunto de datos o una función temporal que representa una variable de interés. Las señales suelen transmitir información sobre un fenómeno, como la temperatura atmosférica, la humedad, la voz humana, las imágenes de televisión, el ladrido de un perro o el canto de los pájaros. En términos más generales, una señal puede ser una función de más de una variable independiente. Por ejemplo, las imágenes dependen de las posiciones horizontal y vertical y pueden considerarse señales bidimensionales. Sin embargo, este texto se centrará en las señales unidimensionales con el tiempo como variable independiente.

Un sistema es una colección de dispositivos que funcionan con una señal de entrada x(t) (o excitación) para producir una señal de salida y(t) (o respuesta). Un sistema también puede considerarse un modelo matemático de un proceso físico que relaciona la señal de entrada con la señal de salida. Algunos ejemplos de sistemas son los circuitos eléctricos, los programas informáticos, el mercado de valores, los patrones climáticos y el cuerpo humano.

Signals and systems help describe how data moves through the world. A signal x(t) is a set of data or a time function that represents a variable of interest. It can carry information about atmospheric temperature, humidity, human voice, television images, a dog’s bark, or birdsongs.

A signal can also depend on more than one independent variable. An image, for example, depends on horizontal and vertical position, so it can be treated as a two-dimensional signal. In this course, the focus is on one-dimensional signals, where time is the independent variable.

A system is a collection of devices that takes an input signal x(t), also called an excitation, and produces an output signal y(t), also called a response. A system can also be a mathematical model of a physical process that connects the input and output. Examples include electric circuits, computer programs, the stock market, weather patterns, and the human body.

Signals inside these models can represent different physical quantities. In electrical systems, they are often currents and voltages. In mechanical systems, they are usually temperatures, forces, and velocities. In hydraulic systems, they may be displacements and pressures.

Signals that enter a system are input signals. Signals produced by the system are output signals. For example, in an electric circuit, voltages and currents that change with time are signals, while the circuit itself is the system. This signals-and-systems framework is a basic tool for analyzing and designing engineering systems that handle energy or information.

EXPLANATION: The focus of this standard is on developing an understanding for the behavior of waves at a boundary.
