Generalmente, la transformada de Laplace de una función está representada por el símbolo L[x(t)], expresado por la siguiente ecuación donde 's' es una variable compleja con componentes reales e imaginarios, σ y ω respectivamente.
Hay dos tipos de transformadas de Laplace: la bilateral y la unilateral.
La transformada bilateral permite que las funciones de tiempo sean distintas de cero para el tiempo negativo, lo que la hace útil tanto para señales causales como no causales.
Por el contrario, la transformada unilateral, que es más común en la práctica, asume una función cero para el tiempo negativo, centrándose únicamente en las señales de tiempo positivo.
Una propiedad única de la transformada de Laplace es su capacidad para convertir una función en el dominio del tiempo en una función en el dominio de la frecuencia. Esta conversión constituye un par de transformadas de Laplace.
