Considere un sistema de motor con solo control proporcional que exhibe un alto sobreimpulso y oscilación máximos, reflejados en la señal de error y su tasa de cambio.
Una señal de error positiva y un par motor positivo creciente inducen un sobreimpulso de salida significativo y oscilaciones debido a una fuerza excesiva y una resistencia insuficiente.

El control proporcional-derivativo (PD) es un método de control ampliamente utilizado en diversos sistemas de ingeniería para mejorar la estabilidad y el rendimiento. En un sistema con solo control proporcional, los problemas comunes incluyen un sobreimpulso máximo alto y una oscilación, que se observan tanto en la señal de error como en su tasa de cambio. Este comportamiento se puede dividir en tres fases distintas: sobreimpulso inicial, subimpulso posterior y estabilización gradual.
Consideremos el ejemplo del control del par motor. Inicialmente, una señal de error positiva genera un par motor positivo que aumenta rápidamente. Este aumento repentino del par motor provoca un sobreimpulso significativo de la salida y oscilaciones, atribuidas a la alta fuerza y a una amortiguación insuficiente. La salida del sistema supera el valor deseado, lo que refleja la excesiva corrección inicial del control proporcional y la débil resistencia.
En la segunda fase, una señal de error negativa produce un par motor negativo, que desacelera la salida y hace que no alcance el objetivo. Este exceso indica la tendencia del sistema a sobrecompensar en la dirección opuesta después del exceso inicial. La reducción del par en esta fase desacelera la salida, pero la ausencia de una amortiguación adecuada da como resultado un comportamiento oscilatorio.
Durante la fase final, reaparece el par motor positivo, lo que reduce el sobreimpulso de la fase anterior. Cada oscilación produce una amplitud de error decreciente, lo que estabiliza progresivamente la salida del sistema. PD control helps reduce overshoot and oscillation in motor torque systems. Proportional control uses the size of the error signal to set the correction. When the response is too large or too small, the output can move away from the target and then swing back.

With proportional control alone, the system often goes through three stages. First, a positive error signal creates a rapidly rising positive motor torque. That strong push can cause a large overshoot because the system has high force but not enough damping, which is the resistance that helps slow motion.

Next, the error signal turns negative. This produces negative motor torque, which slows the output and can make it undershoot the target. The system then overcorrects in the opposite direction, and the lack of damping keeps the motion oscillating.

In the final stage, positive motor torque appears again and reduces the undershoot. Each new swing becomes smaller as the error amplitude drops and the output settles closer to the desired value. PD control improves this behavior by adding an anticipatory adjustment based on the slope, or rate of change, of the error signal. That extra correction helps predict the direction of the error, lowers overshoot and undershoot, and makes the output more stable.
