Estos encofrados pueden dejarse en su lugar durante un tiempo específico y humedecerse si son de madera, o si se retiran temprano, el concreto debe humedecerse y cubrirse con láminas de polietileno.
Un recubrimiento se suspende sobre grandes superficies horizontales de concreto recién colocadas expuestas a la intemperie seca hasta que el concreto está fraguado, seguido de un curado en húmedo. 
Rociar o nebulizar el agua con un sistema de boquillas y encharcar o inundar las superficies de hormigón con agua facilita el curado en húmedo.
Alternativamente, cubrir el concreto con aserrín o paja humedecidos o telas saturadas que retienen la humedad, como esteras de arpillera húmeda o algodón que se riegan periódicamente o se cubren con una película de polietileno, asegura el contacto entre el agua y el concreto.
Proporcionar membranas impermeables sobre el concreto puede minimizar la evaporación de la humedad, pero evitar la entrada de humedad. Estos pueden estar hechos de papeles impermeables, láminas de plástico o compuestos de sellado formadores de membranas aplicados manualmente o rociados sobre superficies de concreto húmedas.  
El curado de las muestras de prueba de laboratorio de hormigón se logra sumergiéndolas en agua.

Los elementos de hormigón con una pequeña relación superficie-volumen se curan engrasando y humedeciendo los encofrados antes de verter el elemento de hormigón. Estos encofrados se pueden dejar en su lugar durante un período prolongado para evitar la pérdida de humedad y se pueden humedecer si están hechos de un material adecuado para humedecerse. Si los encofrados se retiran antes, el elemento de hormigón se humedece y se cubre con láminas de polietileno para mantener la humedad. Para grandes superficies de hormigón horizontales expuestas al clima seco, se suspende una cubierta temporal sobre la superficie hasta que el hormigón fragüe, después de lo cual se inicia el curado húmedo. El curado húmedo se puede lograr rociando o nebulizando agua sobre el hormigón utilizando un sistema de boquillas o encharcando las superficies con agua. Además, cubrir el hormigón con aserrín humedecido, paja o telas saturadas que retengan la humedad, como arpillera húmeda o esteras de algodón, mantiene el contacto del hormigón con el agua. También se utilizan membranas impermeables, como papeles impermeables, láminas de plástico o compuestos de sellado que forman membranas, para reducir la evaporación de la humedad del hormigón. Sin embargo, estas membranas no logran reemplazar la humedad perdida por autodesecación, ya que la entrada de humedad al hormigón desde el exterior es imposible. La inmersión en agua se practica para curar muestras de hormigón para ensayos de laboratorio.

Concrete curing for moisture retention helps fresh concrete keep the water it needs as it hardens. For members with a small surface-to-volume ratio, the forms are often oiled and moistened before the concrete is placed. These forms may stay in place for a long time to reduce moisture loss. If the form material can be wetted, it can also be kept damp.

When forms are removed early, the concrete member is moistened and then covered with polythene sheets. Large horizontal concrete surfaces in dry weather need special care. A temporary cover is suspended above the surface until the concrete sets. After that, wet curing begins.

Wet curing keeps the surface in contact with water. It can be done by spraying or fogging water through nozzles. It can also be done by ponding, which means holding water on the surface. Other materials such as moistened sawdust, straw, wet hessian, or cotton mats may also be used. These water-retaining coverings help prevent the concrete from drying out.

Some curing methods use impervious membranes, such as waterproof paper, plastic sheets, or sealing compounds that form a membrane. These materials reduce moisture evaporation from the concrete. However, they do not replace water lost by self-desiccation, because outside moisture cannot enter the concrete. For laboratory test specimens, curing is often done by immersion in water.
