Por ejemplo, el método de presión consiste en colocar una muestra de hormigón en una cámara sellada y calcular el contenido de aire en función de los cambios de presión.
Para hormigones ligeros o que contienen áridos muy absorbentes, es más adecuado el método volumétrico.
El método volumétrico consiste en añadir alcohol a una muestra de hormigón para ayudar a liberar las burbujas de aire y luego medir el cambio de volumen.
Otro método, el método gravimétrico, consiste en medir la densidad del hormigón para calcular el contenido de aire.
Alternativamente, el método indicador Chace ofrece una prueba de campo rápida que proporciona una medida aproximada del contenido de aire al observar el cambio en el volumen de aire en un dispositivo similar a una jeringa a medida que se fuerza en el concreto.
