Local attraction is a compass error caused by nearby magnetic influences. Metal fences, buried pipes, vehicles, buildings, power lines, and natural iron ore deposits can all disturb the compass. Small items such as wristwatches, steel tools, and belt buckles may also create local magnetic fields that bend the Earth's magnetic field and affect the reading.

These disturbances make compass readings inaccurate. That can create problems in navigation and land surveying. Surveyors look for local attraction by comparing the forward bearing and the back bearing on a survey line. The forward bearing is measured by sighting toward the next point, and the back bearing is taken by sighting back to the starting point.

Under normal conditions, the forward and back bearings should differ by 180°. If the difference is not 180°, local attraction is likely affecting the line. Surveyors then take extra readings from a reference point that is known to be free from local attraction. Bearings taken from this neutral point stay consistent and help identify where the error is happening.

Finding and correcting local attraction is important for accurate magnetic surveys. If the disturbance is ignored, it can lead to serious errors in navigation and land measurement.
