Endospores and Sporulation

Las endosporas son células latentes y altamente resistentes, generalmente formadas por bacterias grampositivas para sobrevivir a condiciones desfavorables como el calor extremo, la radiación, la sequedad extrema o la presencia de productos químicos agresivos. La formación de endosporas, o esporulación, se desencadena por factores estresantes ambientales o el agotamiento de nutrientes. Comienza con la replicación del ADN, seguida de la división celular asimétrica, que separa la forespora de la célula madre. La forespora contiene el contenido cromosómico y citoplasmático junto con grandes cantidades de complejo de ácido calcio-dipicolínico. Este complejo se encarga de deshidratar la endospora, así como de estabilizar y proteger su ADN contra el daño por calor. A continuación, la célula madre engulle la espora, formando una doble membrana a su alrededor. A continuación, se forma una gruesa capa de peptidoglicano, la corteza, entre las dos membranas. Se añade una capa protectora de proteínas alrededor de la corteza, lo que mejora la resistencia de la endospora en condiciones extremas. Esporulaci&#243;n y protecci&#243;n del ADN
La formaci&#243;n de endosporas, o esporulaci&#243;n, se induce por factores estresantes del entorno, como la escasez de nutrientes o cambios dr&#225;sticos de temperatura. El proceso comienza con la replicaci&#243;n del ADN, seguido por una divisi&#243;n celular asim&#233;trica que separa el citoplasma en un compartimiento m&#225;s peque&#241;o, la forespora, y un compartimiento m&#225;s grande, la c&#233;lula madre. La forespora alberga el cromosoma bacteriano y otros componentes citoplasm&#225;ticos esenciales. Durante esta etapa, se sintetizan y acumulan altas concentraciones del complejo de &#225;cido calcio-dipicolinato (Ca-DPA) dentro de la forespora. Endospores help some bacteria survive harsh conditions. These dormant cells are made mainly by Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus and Clostridium. They are highly resistant to heat, ultraviolet and ionizing radiation, drying, and toxic chemicals. In rare cases, endospore-like structures have also been seen in some Gram-negative bacteria, including Coxiella burnetii and Sporosarcina ureae, as well as in other species exposed to extreme conditions.

Sporulation begins when bacteria face stress, such as a lack of nutrients or major temperature changes. The cell first copies its DNA. It then divides unevenly into a smaller forespore and a larger mother cell. The forespore holds the bacterial chromosome and other key cell contents. During this stage, calcium-dipicolinic acid, or Ca-DPA, builds up inside the forespore. Ca-DPA helps dry out the endospore, strengthen its structure, and protect DNA from heat and chemical damage.

Next, the mother cell engulfs the forespore and forms a double membrane around it. A thick peptidoglycan layer called the cortex is added between these membranes. The cortex helps keep the core dehydrated and lowers enzyme and metabolic activity, which supports long dormancy. Around the cortex, the cell builds a tough protein coat. This coat adds strength and helps resist enzymes and UV radiation.

When the endospore is fully formed, the mother cell breaks apart in a programmed way and releases it. The mature endospore can remain viable for thousands of years. When conditions improve, it germinates and returns to its vegetative bacterial form. In that state, it can grow and reproduce again. This survival strategy helps spore-forming bacteria live in many extreme habitats.
