Una derivada negativa significa que está disminuyendo y el grafo tiene una pendiente descendente.Cuando la derivada es cero o indefinida, el punto se llama punto crítico. Estos puntos marcan lugares donde la función puede cambiar de aumentar a disminuir, o viceversa.Dividen el dominio en intervalos donde la prueba de la primera derivada puede usarse para encontrar el comportamiento de la función.Si la derivada es positiva antes de un punto crítico y negativa después, la función alcanza un máximo local. The first derivative shows how a function changes across its domain. In calculus, the derivative is written as f'(x). It tells us whether the graph is rising, falling, or turning at a given point.

A function is increasing on an interval when its derivative is positive. That means the slope of the tangent line is positive. A function is decreasing on an interval when its derivative is negative. In that case, the tangent line slopes downward.

These sign changes help describe the overall shape of a graph. They also help predict how a function behaves in different parts of its domain. The first derivative is therefore a useful tool for sketching graphs.

Critical points are the places where the first derivative is zero or undefined. These points are important because they may mark local maxima or local minima. The First Derivative Test checks how the sign of f'(x) changes near each critical point.
